Themes: Emotional baggage; forgiveness/unforgiveness; making peace with your past; emotional hurts; emotional healing
Categories: With God, Topical, Spiritual Growth, Life Situations, Christian Living, Women's Ministry
Summary:

After several years of no contact, Julie shows up at the home of a friend lugging two very heavy "bags" behind her. When the friend questions her as to the reason for the bags, Julie recounts the events in her life that made them appear: years ago when Julie was engaged to Mark, she discovered her sister, Jill, was having an affair with her fiancee. Betrayed and humiliated, Julie left town only to discover that her "baggage" followed her. Five years later, due to a large family celebration, Julie must "confront" Mark and Jill who were eventually married. The only problem is anger and bitterness have filled Julie's heart and the more she dwells on the past, the more "baggage" appears.  When Julie's friend tells her she needs to leave the past behind and forgive Mark and her sister, Julie finds it an impossible task; however, she realizes the only way to freedom is through forgiveness.  But finding the strength to do it is another matter entirely.

Notes:

For anyone struggling with the idea of forgivenss, this skit nicely illustrates the way bitterness and hatred can paralyze a person and keep them from being free.

Setting: A living room.

As the scene opens, Fran is sitting on the couch reading a book, when a loud  knock at the door is heard.

Julie:

(frantic voice from off stage) Fran? Are you there?  (more loud knocking is heard) Fran?

Fran:

(looking over at the door) Julie?  Is that you?

Julie:

(from off stage) Help me!

Fran:

(puts the book down and immediately gets up and goes to the door) I'm coming!

Fran opens the door and Julie struggles to get in the doorway while dragging 2 large garbage bags (suitcases could also be used) behind her.  The bags should appear to be very heavy and Julie has a hard time moving them throughout the room.

Julie:

I'm so glad you're here!  I know it's been a long time...

Fran:

You may not attend our church anymore but you're still one of my dearest friends and you're welcome here anytime.  It's so good to see you.

Julie:

Thanks.  I didn't know where else to go.

Fran:

(noticing the bags) What are those?

Julie:

It's a long story.

Fran:

Wait a minute, is that....(recognition begins to hit)

Julie:

I'm afraid so.

Fran:

Are you still carrying it around with you?

Julie:

It appears that way.

Fran:

(examining the bags) Wasn't there only one before?

Julie:

Yes.

Fran:

And wasn't it a lot smaller?

Julie:

Yes, and a lot less heavy.  That's why I'm here.  I don't know what's happening.

Fran:

Come in and sit down and you can tell me about it.

Julie tries to sit move toward the couch but finds she can't take a step without lugging her bags with her

Fran:

(noticing Fran's lack of movement) What's the matter?

Julie:

(panicking) I can't move!

Fran:

(concerned) You mean you're paralyzed?

Julie:

I can't move without dragging these things with me.

Fran:

Here let me help.  (makes a move to lift one of the bags)

Julie:

(with relief) Thanks.  I'd appreciate it.

Fran tries to pick up the bag but find it won't move

Fran:

They're so heavy!

Julie:

I know!

Fran:

(tries hard to pick it up but can't) I can't lift it.

With great effort Julie is able to pick up the bags

Julie:

I was afraid of that.

Fran:

What?

Julie:

I'm the only one who can carry them.

Fran watches as Julie drags the bags to the couch & sits down

Fran:

(sits on the couch near Julie) Is there anything I can do to help?

Julie:

I don't know.  I thought maybe you could help me figure out why all of this is happening.

Fran:

I'll do my best.  When did all of this start?

Julie:

Right after the wedding.  (pause) Well, after the "almost" wedding.

Fran:

I never did understand why you called it off.  All of a sudden you quit coming to church and when I tried to call, I got a message saying your phone had been disconnected.  I was worried about you.

Julie:

I'm sorry about that.  I really am.  I just didn't know how to face everyone.

Fran:

Mark never said a word to anyone either.  He quit coming to church around the same time you did.

Julie:

(angry) That's because he's a coward!

Fran:

I hadn't seen him at all until about a year later and he was ...

Julie:

...Married to someone else.  I know.

Fran:

(surprised) How did you find out?

Julie:

The woman he married was my sister.
