SettingThe Last Supper.  A long table is set up to resemble a dinner table.  All twelve disciples will eventually be seated at the table, however, only a few of them actually have lines.  James, John, Peter, Judas, Thomas and Matthew will speak, while the other disciples go through the motions but won't have lines.

As the scene opens, 9 of the 12 disciples are seated at the table.  Those missing are, James, Peter and John. The atmosphere is light and casual, as the disciples have no idea why Jesus has called them there.

Matthew:

Does anybody know why we're meeting here instead of down by the river?

The other disciples shake their heads "no"

Judas:

Jesus never said anything to me.

Thomas:

All I know is he told me to meet him here.  He said something about his "appointed time being near."

Matthew:

He said the same thing to me.  He said he wanted to celebrate the Passover.

Judas:

What do you think it all means?

Thomas:

I don't know.  I figured we'd find out once we got here.

James, John and Peter enter

James:

Hey, are we late?  Did we miss anything?

Matthew:

No, not yet.

James, Peter and John take a seat at the table

Judas:

(holding his nose, waving his arms to "clear the air") Except maybe a shower.  You guys stink!

Thomas:

(reacting similar to Judas) You smell like fish!

James:

What do you expect?  We're fishermen.

Peter:

Yeah, some of us have to work for a living, you know?  We've been out on the boat catching fish all day.

Judas:

Still, you could have cleaned up before you got here.

James:

Why? The fish didn't seem to mind.

Matthew:

(reacting with all the others to the "stench") Well, we do!

Peter:

(defensive) We came straight from work.  We didn't have time.

John:

(smelling himself) It's hardly noticeable.  Besides, Jesus won't mind.

Judas:

We'll find out.  Here he comes. (pointing the side stage)

Jesus enters, smiling and shaking hands with several of the men

Jesus:

It's good to see you all here.  I'm glad you could make it.  (he sits at the empty chair in the middle of the table-he sniffs the air) Hmm, are we having fish for dinner?

Thomas:

No, that's just these guys.  (pointing to James, John and Peter)

Judas:

(to John) I told you he'd notice.

John:

(to Judas) I didn't say he wouldn't notice-I said he wouldn't mind.

Jesus:

I'm just glad you're all here.

John:

(to Judas) See?

Matthew:

Why are we here?

Peter:

Yeah, we were wondering that on the way over.  We usually meet by the river or out in the fields.  Why so formal tonight?

Jesus:

We'll get to all that in a minute.  First, let's gets some food on the table. I'm hungry.  (calling off stage) Ladies, we're ready!

Two women enter and set food on the table.  As the men continue to talk, the food is passed around and each person takes some and puts it on his plate.  Real food can be used if desired, or the actors can pretend to eat from their plates and bowls.

Jesus:

So, tell me about your day.  Does anyone have any interesting stories to tell?

James:

(smiling) Peter was trying to walk on the water again.

Peter:

(defensive) I was not!

James:

You were too!  I saw you.

Jesus:

(amused) Is this true, Peter?

Peter:

No!

Jesus:

Peter, tell the truth.

Peter:

Okay, it's true. (under his breath, to James) You were supposed to keep quiet about that!
