Motherhood Hall of Fame-Drama Skit

Motherhood Hall of Fame-Drama Skit

Themes: Motherhood; special qualities of mothers; Mother's Day
Categories: Mother's Day, Bible Characters
Summary:

The Board of the Motherhood Hall of Fame has commenced. Biblical mothers and Board Members include: Hannah (mother of Samuel), Hagar (mother of Ishmael), Sarah (mother of Isaac) and Board President--Mary (the mother of Jesus.) Angela, a modern day "every woman," is petitioning to be included in the Hall of Fame, but the Board is hesitant to let her "in" until they know of her qualifications. The Board's idea of Hall of Fame material, is a "Leave it to Beaver" type of mother, but Angela insists that every mother is special and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. She says, "All moms are extraordinary.  Not because of what we do, if we work or don't work, if we're married or single, if we have 1 child or 10...what makes us special is who we are: the fact that we love our children and do our best to raise them." The Board seems skeptical at first but Angela eventually wins them over, and for a moment even both Sarah and Hagar find something in the other to admire: they're both moms.

SettingMary and Hagar are seated at a small table on one side of the stage. In front of them are signs with their names on it. Another small table and two chairs face the other one, containing Sarah and Hannah.  They also have signs with their name on it in front of them.  The tables should be in close proximity to each other but with enough space between them to allow for Angela, the applicant, to stand.  Mary, Hagar, Hannah and Sarah should all be wearing the same color jacket or blouse.

Mary:

All right ladies, as President of the Motherhood Hall of Fame, I hereby call this meeting to order.

Sarah:

(to Hannah) Tell me again, why does she automatically get to be the President?

Hannah:

Because she's Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Sarah:

I know, but that's the reason for everything:  (speaks in a mocking voice) "Give Mary that award.  After all, she is the mother of Jesus."  "Let Mary have the first piece of cake-she is the mother of Jesus after all. It's so grand to meet someone of your stature, Mary, the Mother of Jesus."  For once, couldn't someone else be recognized?  The rest of us are mothers too, you know.

Hannah:

I'd watch it if I were you, Sarah.  You're lucky to even be on this board after how you treated poor Hagar.

Sarah:

(defensive) She had a baby with my husband!

Hannah:

Only after you begged her to!  You practically threw her at Abraham.  What did you expect?

Sarah:

(angry) I expected to be shown some respect from my maid servant.  Instead, she practically rubbed it my face! And if anyone has the right to be here, it's me.  I allowed my only son to be hauled on top of a mountain to be offered as a sacrifice!

Hannah:

(comforting) That showed true strength and courage, Sarah.  You redeemed yourself that day.  Thank the Lord that story had a happy ending.

Sarah:

(softening) You're right.  I'm sorry, Hannah.  You deserve to be here too.  I don't know how you did it: you prayed for a child, and then once Samuel came along, you dedicated his life to the Lord, which meant letting him go off to study with Eli.  Talk about sacrifice!

Hannah:

We're mothers.  We've  all made sacrifices and we all deserve to be here.

Mary:

Now ladies, as I mentioned in my memo, we have a woman coming in today for an interview.  She feels that she should be allowed into the Motherhood Hall of Fame.

Hagar:

But we haven't even sent out ballots yet.  We have to vote first before the official ceremony can take place.

Mary:

Normally, that's the procedure, however, this woman is asking for special consideration.  She'd like to meet with the members of the board in person before that time.  Otherwise, she doesn't feel she has a chance at a nomination.

Hagar:

(smiling, encouraging) Then I say we hear her out.

Sarah:

(glaring at Hagar) I'm so glad you approve, Hagar, since that seems to be what we're all here for.

Hannah:

Put the claws back in, Sarah.  She's just being nice.

Sarah:

I'm sorry, Hagar.  (to Mary, smiling sweetly) I'd like to give this woman a chance too.

Mary:

Wonderful.  Then let's call her in, shall we?  (calling off stage) Angela dear, we're ready for you.

Angela enters

Angela:

Hi everyone.  It's such an honor to meet all of you, really.  I can't believe I'm standing here talking to Mary, mother of Jesus.  It's a privilege.

Sarah:

(to Hannah) What did I tell you?

Hannah:

Shhh.

Mary:

Thank you dear.  It's nice to meet you too. So Angela, tell us, why are you here?

Angela:

Well, I'd like to be inducted into the Motherhood Hall of Fame

Sarah:

Who wouldn't?  It's a very prestigious club you know.

Angela:

I'm aware of that.  But are you aware, and I mean this with the highest of respect, that you're "club" is very discriminatory?

Mary:

(gasps) Discriminatory?  Why would you say such a thing, dear?

Angela:

Again, with all due respect, I would say that because it is.  You've left a whole lot of deserving women out.

Hannah:

I know almost every mom on Earth would like to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, but we do have to have standards.  If you don't mind my asking Angela, what are your qualifications?

Angela:

Well, I'm a mom.

Hannah:

Yes, but what else?

Angela:

What do you mean, "what else?"

Hagar:

I think what Hannah is asking you, is what makes you special as a mom?

Angela:

Isn't just being a mom enough?

Mary:

Let me put this another way dear, speaking as someone who has the experience of raising our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ...

Sarah:

(smiling) There she goes again!

Hannah:

(smiling, trying not to laugh) Stop.

Mary:

I find it takes a special effort to raise a child.  The moms inducted into the Hall of Fame have all gone to great lengths to provide for their children.  They've often had hardships and had to sacrifice their own needs for the good of their children.

Angela:

I've had to sacrifice for my children before. Every mother I know has.
