Out of the Box-Drama Skit

Themes: The benefits of using skits in your programs, thinking "outside the box," doing something different, being unique
Categories: Annual Events
Summary:

Jane and Karen are planning a meeting.  Jane wants to do things the old way but Karen has something else in mind: she wants to use a skit to liven things up a bit.  Jane isn't too sure--she's worried about the costs, the time and the talent.  But Karen has a sure fire way to convince Jane to try something new: she pulls her into a skit idea.  This "mini skit" within a skit shows the ease and benefits of using drama to enhance your programs, meetings or groups.

Setting: Skit opens with Jane sitting at the table. She has an open Bible and note pad in front of her, and she nervously taps her pencil on the table. She looks at her watch and then at the door. She is waiting for Karen to arrive.

Karen: (bursts into the room with a large purse or backpack with a Bible and nothepad & pen in it'she joins Jane at the table and begins to take out the Bible, pad, pencil etc.) Sorry I'm late, Jane. When I got to my mother's house, I realized I'd left Mr. Lumpy at home. Marshall won't take his nap without Mr. Lumpy bear so I had to go back and get it. Sorry to keep you waiting so long.

Jane: It's okay. I was just going over our scripture verse for the meeting, and jotting down some ideas.

Karen: Great. What have you got so far?

Jane: (looking at her notes) Well, I thought we'd start the meeting by sharing our joys and concerns for this week and then open with prayer.

Karen: Sounds good so far. What else?

Jane: Then I thought you could read the main scripture and then I'll read another one that goes along with the theme, and then we can take turns explaining why those scriptures are so important. That's all I've got so far.

Karen: (a bit disappointed) Oh.

Jane: (picking up on Karen's tone) You don't have to read the scriptures if you don't want to. I can read them both or I can ask someone in the group to read if you're not comfortable with that.

Karen: No, it's not that.

Jane: Then what is it?

Karen: I guess I just had something else in mind.

Jane: (aghast) You don't want to read any scripture?

Karen: No, I'm fine reading scripture.

Jane: Whew! You had me worried there for a minute!

Karen: I just wish there were a different way to present the scripture that's all.

Jane: A different way?

Karen: Yeah, you know, something a little more "out of the box." Something exciting, unique...different.

Jane: But we've always done it this way.

Karen: I know, that's why I want to do something different. Don't you ever get tired of doing the same old thing?

Jane: I don't know, I never really thought about it.

Karen: Well, I have.

Jane: What's wrong with the way we do things now?

Karen: There's nothing wrong, the meetings are fine. I'd just like to shake things up once in awhile; do something unpredictable or fun. I want to do something people will remember.

Jane: What if we wear the same color outfits that day? Ooh, or even a matching scarf. No one would ever predict we'd do that.

Karen: Matching outfits?

Jane: Yeah, if we both wear lime green blouses with yellow slacks and a matching pink scarf, I bet people would remember that.

Karen: You're on the right track, but that's not exactly what I had in mind.

Jane: Then what exactly did you have in mind?

Karen: How about doing a skit?

Jane: Like a play? Karen, that would take months to prepare! We don't have the time to do something like that.

Karen: No, not a play, just a short skit. You know, just a page or two--something that would only take a few minutes.

Jane: Would we need a lot of people or sets? What about props, make-up, and costumes? I don't think we have enough money in our budget to cover all that.

Karen: You're thinking too big again, Jane. I'm not talking about putting on "The Sound of Music" or anything. We wouldn't need any kind of sets, and all it would take is a few simple props from home. We'd only need a handful of people for a skit. We could even do a skit with just you and I if we needed to.

Jane: Just two people? Are you sure?

Karen: Sure, I'm sure. I'll show you.
