Summary:

The seeds are alive and giving Farmer a hard time! It's planting season but the seeds don't want to wait for the great soil Farmer is preparing for them, since they want to be planted NOW!  Much to Farmer's horror, the seeds begin to get rebellious and start jumping into the first soil they find. It's not apparent to them at first, but their lives are about to get complicated and filled with poking thorns, hungry birds, and unyielding rocks.    Only one seed has heeded Farmer's warning and as the others begin to struggle, they wish they would have listened and waited.

A fun take based on the parable of the sower found in Matthew 13:3-9.

Setting: The   stage should be divided into 4 areas:    rocks, thorns, grass and black soil.    You can achieve this by using cardboard or poster board with these   items drawn on them - just make sure the boards are large enough for a person(s)   to stand behind them.

As   the scene opens, the Farmer enters followed by the seeds, who enter behind   him in a single line.  Farmer is   dressed in bib-overalls and a flannel shirt.    The seeds are all dressed according to the color of their vegetable:   Mater is dressed in red; Cuke is dressed in dark green; CT is dressed in   orange; Bean is dressed in light green.

Farmer:

(turns to face the seeds) Okay seeds,   today is the big day - the day you all get planted!

The   seeds cheer

Farmer:

But before you're   planted, the soil needs to be prepared.

The   seeds groan

Carrot Top: (CT)

What do you have   to do to prepare the soil?

Farmer:

I need to till it   up, fertilize it and then dig some rows.

Cucumber: (Cuke)

(whining) But we want to be planted now!    How long is that gonna to take?

Farmer:

It'll take a   little while but it will be worth it.  I promise.

Cuke:

I guess we could   wait a little while.

Farmer:

Just sit tight   and I'll be back as soon as I can. (Farmer   exits)

Tomato: (Mater)

What are we   supposed to do while he's preparing the soil?

Bean:

We could all   introduce ourselves.  My name is Bean.

CT:

I'm Carrot Top   but my friends call me CT.

Mater:

I'm Mater the   tomater.

Cuke:

And I'm Cuke the   cucumber.

There's   a long pause and they all look uncomfortable

Mater:

That didn't take   long.  Now what?

Bean:

(excited) I know!  We could sing songs!  I've got the perfect one.  Everybody sing with me:

(sings) "This land is your land. This land is my land..."

All   the seeds groan in unison

CT:

I don't want to   sing songs.  I want be planted so I can start growing.

Bean:

But you heard   what the Farmer said; we're supposed to stay here and wait.

Mater:

I hate to wait!

Cuke:

Me too.  I say we find the nearest piece of ground   and just jump in.

CT:

(excited) Sounds good to me!

Bean:

But we   can't!  Farmer said...

CT:

Farmer also said   it was gonna be awhile.  Wouldn't you   rather go ahead and get planted now?

Mater:

Yeah, just think   of all the work we'll save Farmer.  If   we jump in now, that's a lot less rows he'll have to dig.

Bean:

(hesitant) I don't know.  There's a reason Farmer told us to wait,   and I think we should do what he said.

Mater:

Suit   yourself.  But I'm going in!

Mater   "jumps" into the patch of grass, and acts like he's   "swimming/doing the backstroke" in it

Mater:

(inhales deeply) Mmm!  Nothing like the smell of freshly cut   grass! (giggles) And it tickles a   little too!  Come on in guys, the   ground feels great!

CT   and Cuke look at each other

Bean:

(seeing their "knowing" looks, he   yells) Don't do it!

Ignoring   Bean, CT and Cuke both make a leap.  CT   heads for the rocks, while Cuke heads for the thorns.

CT:

Ouch!

Bean:

(worried) What's the matter?

CT:

The ground is a little harder than I   expected but I think it will be fine once I get used to it. How are you,   Cuke?

Cuke:

Okay, I   guess.  (to Bean)

Bean:

What do you mean,   "okay I guess?"

Cuke:

I thought I felt   something prick me but I'm sure it's nothing.    (to Bean) Are you sure you   don't want to come in with us?

Mater:

Yeah, it feels   pretty good in here! (he's smiling and   jumping around in the "grass")

Bean:

I'm sure.  I'd rather wait for Farmer.

Mater:

Your loss!

Farmer   enters with a rake in his hands

Farmer:

Okay seeds, time   to get planted! (noticing where the   others are, Farmer let out a huge gasp) Oh no!  (to   Bean) What happened?

Bean:

They said they   couldn't wait.  I tried to stop them   but...

Farmer:

(puts a hand on Bean's shoulder) It's   not your fault, Bean.

Bean:

What will happen   to them?

Farmer:

Nothing good, I'm   afraid.

Bean:

But they're going   to be okay, right?

Farmer:

(shakes his head sadly) Let's just wait   and see.  I'll do what I can for them.   (perking up) At least you'll be safe and happy in your new   home.  Come on, let me show you.

Bean   follows Farmer to the black soil. Farmer helps Bean get in and then begins to   act as if he's raking soil all around Bean. Bean stretches out and smiles, acting   as if she's "in heaven" - very happy, relaxed and content

Bean:

This soil is   fantastic!

Farmer:

It's the best   soil around, and thanks to my fertilizer it's full of nutrients that will   help you grow big and strong.

Bean:

Great, because   I'm starving!

Farmer:

So, was it worth   the wait?

Bean:

(shakes her head "yes"   dramatically) Definitely!  It's so   warm and cozy!  I love it!

Farmer:

Good.  I think you'll be very happy here.

Farmer   gets closer to the others as he speaks to them as well

Farmer:

I wish all of you   had waited to be planted in the proper spot. I think you would have been much   happier in the soil I had planned for you.

Mater:

But this is fine   too.  We're having a great time!  Aren't we guys?

The   others respond positively

CT:

Don't worry about   us, we'll get used to our new homes real soon and everything will work out fine.  You'll see.

Farmer:

Well...(not convinced) try to stay safe and   I'll be back to check on you in a few days.

Farmer   exits

CT:

See Bean, we told   you nothing bad was gonna happen.

Cuke:

Still...I wonder   why Farmer told us to stay safe.

Mater:

Who cares?  We've all been planted and now it's time to   grow!

Bean:

Technically, I'm   the only one who's been planted.  You guys just jumped on the first ground surface you could find.

Mater:

Ground is   ground.  What difference does it make?

Black   Bird enters.  Bird is dressed in all   black and "flies" around with his arms outstretched, flapping like   a bird. Bird swoops towards Mater. Optional: Bird can have a beak and   feathers.

Mater:

(swats back at Bird) Hey, watch it!

Bird   flies away from Mater, then swoops back near him. Whenever Bird gets close to   Mater, Mater reacts by taking a "swing" at Bird with his arms,   fending him off.

Mater:

(to Bird) What is your problem, buddy?

Bird   stops near Mater and flaps his wings

Bird:

The problem is   I'm hungry.
