A Shining Star-Drama Skit

A Shining Star-Drama Skit

Themes: Reaching others for God; Witnessing; Evangelism; Shining like the stars in the heavens; Being an example for others; Being a light in the darkness
Categories: Women's Ministry, Spiritual Growth, Life Situations
Summary:

Using the theater as a metaphor for life, a Director and her assistant hold auditions for a "super star": someone who can be a light in the darkness and a shining example of God's love. But finding this "star" proves harder than it seems:  Starla thinks she shines because of the way she looks and that she's a good example because people will be drawn to her beauty; Francis is all "business" and no emotion and thinks she can win people over with her "smarts";  Madge believes in the "fire and brimstone" approach by scaring people into believing in God; and Hazel has such low self-esteem and a poor understanding of the Bible that it's hard to see her as any kind of star.  All hope of finding a star seems lost until a conversation with the janitor ensues, and we're reminded that a true star can shine anywhere.

Setting: A   theater stage.  The stage can be blank   except for 3 chairs - two are off to the side next to each other and the   third is closer to center stage.

As   the scene opens, Tessa (the Director) and Pat (the Assistant) enter.  Tessa is a woman of experience and is dressed   nicely, classy, very feminine and professional.  In contrast, Pat is younger, more   inexperienced and is dressed nicely but more simply.  Pat has a clipboard and pen in her hands.

As   Pat and Tessa enter, Pat looks around in wide-eyed wonderment and admiration

Pat:

I love the   theater, Ms. Tessa!

Tessa:

I know you do, dear.    You love it as much as I do. That's   why I hired you.

Pat:

And there's   nothing quite like the Theater of Life,   is there Ms. Tessa? The high's, the low's, the comedy, the drama...

Tessa:

No there   isn't.  Nothing like it anywhere.

Pat:

(curious) So, what's on the agenda   today?

Tessa:

We're holding   auditions.

Pat:

(immediately   happy)   Auditions?  (claps her hands joyfully) I love   audition day! What are we holding auditions for?

Tessa:

Today, we're   going to find a super star .

Pat:

(impressed) A super star? That sounds   so exciting! What are we looking   for?

Tessa:

Well, my young   apprentice,  in the Theater of Life,   there can be many dark moments, and if you're not careful, it's easy to get   on the wrong path. We need someone who shines so brightly they can be a light   in that darkness.

Pat:

(beginning to understand) Someone who   shines the light on the right path.

Tessa:

Exactly.  A shining example of God's love:  the kind of star others can't help but be   drawn to.

Pat:

A super star!  This is gonna be great!  When do we start?

Tessa:

Auditions start right   now.

Tessa   motions to the side of the stage.

Tessa:

(to Pat) I want you to take notes and   pay close attention.

Pat   can hardly contain her excitement as Starla enters.  Starla is dressed to look like an   exaggerated Hollywood starlet: fashionable high heels, stylish dress or   skirt, perhaps a feather boa, big, bold sunglasses, heavy make-up, hair   should be "big" and made up to perfection etc. She should be stylish   but "over-the-top" -  someone   who would definitely stand out in a crowd. Upon seeing Starla, Pat is   obviously impressed.

Starla:

(confidently striding towards Tessa,   holding out her hand to shake)    Hi.  I'm Starla and I'm exactly   what you're looking for.

Tessa   shakes Starla's hand

Pat:

(to Tessa) Her name is Starla!  Get it?    STAR-la.  It's a sign.  We should hire her right away!

Tessa:

(to Pat) Maybe you should take notes   and pay attention a little more quietly.

Pat:

Oops. Sorry!

Tessa:

Hello   Starla.  My name is Tessa and I'm the   director here.  I have to say, I do   like a woman with confidence.

Starla:

Look at me.  What's not to be confident about?

Pat:

(to Tessa) She has a point.

Tessa   gives Pat a "warning" look

Tessa:

When you're   ready, you may go ahead with your audition piece.

Tessa   and Pat sit in the chairs, while Starla walks confidently to center stage.   Once she gets there, she stands straight, with her arms down to her side, her   head bowed down

Starla:

(very dramatically lifts her head and uses   her hands in an over dramatic fashion to emphasize her words - she should be   very "over-the-top" with this; the more dramatic, the better)

"In the   beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And God said, "Let   there be light," and there was light.    And God said the light was 'good.'

We live in a dark   world and we need the light to see. Without light, it would be dark.  When there is light, there is no darkness.  Jesus is the light.

We need the light...

See the light...

Be the light.

Starla   bows as if exhausted from her performance, as if she left every ounce of   strength on the stage

Pat:

(easily impressed, stands up and begins   clapping) That was amazing!

Starla:

(immediately stands straight) I know!  (she   sits in the empty chair)

Tessa:

(aggravated,   she motions for Pat to sit down, then speaks   to Starla) Starla, that was very....(searching   for the right words)...heartfelt.

Starla:

I believe in every word.

Pat:

(in agreement) We totally got that!

Tessa:

(ignoring   Pat, speaks to Starla)   What makes you a super star?

Starla:

For starters, I'm   beautiful, and people respond to beautiful things.  Second, I'm stylish, so people will look at   me and say, "She's got it goin'   on!  I want whatever she has!"   And third, you saw how great of a speaker I am - people will be drawn to my   passion.

Pat:

(still   bright-eyed) I   couldn't agree more!

Tessa:

(standing up) Thank you for coming in   Starla.

Starla   stands and she and Tessa shake hands

Tessa:

We'll let you   know.

Starla   exits confidently

Pat:

(quickly stands up) She was   fantastic!  I LOVE her!  Does she get the part?

Tessa:

NO!

Pat:

(shocked) No? Why not? People would   definitely be drawn to her.

Tessa:

But for all the   wrong reasons, and believe me, they wouldn't stick around long.  She's flashy on the outside, but empty on   the inside.   A true star burns from within.

Pat:

Goodbye Starla. (acts as if she is crossing off a name on her clipboard, then   speaks to Tessa) I guess that's why you get paid the big bucks.

Tessa:

(shouts)   Next!

Francis   enters.  She has a Bible in her hand,   as well as several other large books, like a dictionary. She is dressed in   very drab colors like gray or brown, and looks staunch and   business-like.  She stands in the   center of the stage in a very erect manner, and stares straight ahead out   into the audience, not really looking at Tessa or Pat. She spews facts   without emotion.

Francis:

( she speaks to the audience without much   expression, in a very business-like tone) My name is Francis.  I am here to audition for the role of super   star. I have researched this role extensively and have prepared the following   piece.

Tessa:

(somewhat taken aback) I see. In that   case, you may begin when you're ready.

Tessa   and Pat sit

Pat:

(to Tessa) Not much in the personality   department, is she?

Francis:

(again, speaks in a business-like tone,   void of emotion or expression)

The   unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God. Fornicators, idolaters,   adulterers, thieves,   the covetous, drunkards, revilers, or swindlers...none of them will inherit God's   kingdom.

All who fear the   Lord will hate evil.

God is love.  God loves everyone.  He loves you.

You should repent   and accept the gift of his only son, Jesus, who died for you.  If you don't, you will not inherit God's   kingdom.

(looks to Tessa and Pat)

That is all.

Pat:

(to Tessa) Is she a human or a robot?

Tessa:

(ignoring Pat) Francis, what makes you   a star?

Francis:

I have more   knowledge in my pinky toe than most people have in their whole body.  I have a photographic memory and I have   memorized the entire Bible. I have an IQ of 162, which makes me a genius in   any league.

Pat:

(obviously impressed) Whoa!  Do you know how to get grape juice out of   white carpet? Cause I've been trying for like a week and ...

Tessa:

(quickly interrupts Pat)  Thank you for coming in Francis, we'll keep   you posted.

Francis:

Very well. (she exits)

Pat:

(calls after her) Seriously, if you   could let me know about that carpet treatment that'd be great! (to Tessa) She's not very personable   but I guess she makes up for it with her    smarts. (points to her brain)

Tessa:

It takes more   than just being smart to be a star.    She has no emotional attachment, which means she has no compassion or empathy.  Anyone can spout a bunch of facts but   without meaning and emotion, it's worthless.

Pat:

Not our super   star, huh?

Tessa   shakes her head "no"

Pat:

(crosses another name off the clipboard)   Another one bites the dust.

Tessa:

(shouts) Next!

Madge   enters. She is a very "tough" lady and is dressed appropriately:   perhaps in fatigues, a muscle shirt, heavy work boots, with maybe a bandana   tied around her head.  She should look   tough and menacing, and when she speaks, she is very gruff and frightening,   scaring people into submission.  She   carries a Bible in her hand.

Pat:

(to Tessa) Who is this, Mrs. Rambo?

Tessa:

Don't judge a   book by its cover.

Madge:

(gets in the faces of Pat and Tessa and   begins yelling at them, shaking her Bible at them)  THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH!  THE WAY OF THE WICKED IS AN ABOMINATION   UNTO THE LORD!

Tessa:

(to Pat) Now you can judge her.
