Setting: The stage is bare and requires no particular scenery.

As the scene opens, Melissa, a high school teen, enters. Entering from the opposite side are Brad and Tonya, two teen friends.

Brad:

(to Tonya, pointing in Melissa’s direction) There she is.

Tonya:

(catching up to Melissa) Finally! We’ve been looking everywhere for you.

Melissa:

Hey guys. What’s up?  I have to go home to change and then I’m headed up to the track.

Brad:

Again?  Don’t you ever do anything besides run?

Melissa:

I love running!

Tonya:

(to Brad) You’re just jealous ‘cause you can’t run a 6 minute mile.

Brad:

I could if I…nah, who we kiddin? (shakes his head) Not in a million years.

Melissa:

Besides, we’ve got a meet coming up and if I want to go to state finals, I need all the practice I can get.

Tonya:

Well, tonight you’re gonna have to blow off practice because you, my friend, are  going to the biggest party in history!

Melissa:

I am?

Brad:

Yes, even if we have to kidnap you. Austin Cantrell’s parents had to go out of town for the weekend and he’s throwing this killer party.

Tonya:

Everyone’s going to be there.

Melissa:

(immediately interested) Did you say Austin Cantrell?

Tonya:

Yes. The guy you’ve had a crush on for the last two years is hosting the party.  And you should be there.  It’s the perfect time to talk to him outside of school.

Brad:

(in a high pitched, girly voice) “Oh Austin, you’re such a stud muffin. I looove you! I want to hug you and kiss you and be your girlfriend forever!” (he makes smoochy noises)

Melissa:

(slaps him on the arm playfully) Stop it! I don’t sound like that.

Tonya:

Hey, you can wear that new outfit you just got and I’ll help you do your hair.  But we’ve got to go now.  The party’s gonna be starting soon.

Melissa:

I don’t know you guys…Coach will be waiting for me at the track.

Brad:

Call him and say you’re sick or something.

Melissa:

I don’t know…

Tonya:

Fine.  Then tell him something important came up and you can’t make it.

Melissa:

But I could really use the practice.

Tonya:

It’s just this one time. You can practice tomorrow.  The track isn’t going anywhere is it?

Melissa:

No.

Brad:

But tonight is the only night for the best party of the century.  You don’t want to miss it.

Tonya:

Or Austin.

Melissa:

Well...(hesitates)  I guess I could skip practice this one time.  If it’s for Austin.

Tonya:

Great!  Let’s go.

They start to exit the stage, as Omni enters.  Omni has a remote control in his hand.

Omni:

I wouldn’t do that if I were you. (points the remote control at Melissa, Brad and Tonya.)

Tonya and Brad immediately “freeze.”  Melissa continues to move forward, but then notices Tonya and Brad have stopped.

Melissa:

Hey!  What’s going on?

Omni:

You and I need to have a chat, Melissa.

Melissa:

(suspicious) Hey, how do you know my name? Who are you?

Omni:

I know everything about you. You may call me Omni.

Melissa:

Well Omni, what the heck did you do to my friends?

Omni:

You’re friends are perfectly fine.  Brad and Tonya can’t see or hear us and they won’t remember a thing.

Melissa:

So, what do you want with me?

Omni:

I’m here to stop you from making a huge mistake.

Melissa:

And if you can’t?

Omni:

The choice is yours of course but what I have to show you may help you change your mind.  I’m here to show you your future.

Melissa:

And how do you plan to do that?

Omni:

With this. (holds up the remote)

Melissa:

It’s a remote control.

Omni:

It’s a universal remote control, and with it, I can see your past, present and future.  And right now, it’s your future that concerns me.

Melissa:

 (skeptical) Uh-huh.

Omni:

I can see you don’t believe me, so I’ll just have to show you.  Let’s fast forward to the party tonight, shall we?

Omni aims and clicks the remote.  Immediately, Brad and Tonya “unfreeze” and exit, as three more teens, Austin, Becca, and Mike enter.  Also, Mom and Dad enter.  They should all move quickly, as in a “fast forward” motion.  Austin, Becca and Mike should have cups in their hands, and they should be huddled together as if talking.  Mom and Dad move to the side of the stage, and stand with their backs to the audience. Once everyone is in place, they all “freeze.” Melissa watches in amazement as this occurs.

Melissa:

(to Omni) How did you do that?

Omni:

I told you… (holds up the remote) universal remote.

Melissa:

Now what?

Omni:

It’s time for you to join the party.

Omni aims the remote and clicks, then quickly exits the stage.  The others in the group “unfreeze” and act as if they are talking and laughing.

Becca:

(noticing Melissa, goes to her) Melissa, there you are. I thought we were going to have to send in a search party to find you.  Where have you been?

Melissa:

(confused) Uh…I…

Becca:

Never mind.  You need to come say hi to Austin.  He’s been asking if you were here yet.

Melissa:

(pleasantly surprised) Austin was asking about me?

Becca:

Yeah.  I think he wants to ask you out.

Melissa:

(shocked) Are you serious? I swear Becca, if you’re playing around…

 Becca:

I’m not!  I heard him talking to Mike about it.

Melissa:

(smiling) I can’t believe it!

Becca:

Believe it.  Now get over there and talk to him before he changes his mind.

Becca and Melissa head over to the group.

Mike:

Hey, there she is.  I told you she’d come, Austin.

Austin:

(to Melissa) I was beginning to wonder.

Melissa:

(looking around, then speaks to Austin) It looks like a great party.

Austin:

It is--now that you’re here.

Becca:

Melissa was just saying how thirsty she was.

Austin:

Well, we can’t have that.  Here, have some punch.  (he hands Melissa his cup)

Melissa:

Thanks. (puts the cup to her lips but then doesn’t drink) This smells like alcohol.

Mike:

That’s because it is.  And I should know ‘cause I’m the one who spiked the punch!  I call it “Mike’s Madness.”

Becca:

It’s good stuff.  Have some.

Melissa hesitates

Austin:

What’s the matter?  Haven’t you ever had alcohol before?

Melissa:

No.

Mike:

Then this is the perfect time to try it.  Bottoms up! (he drinks down a big swig)

Melissa:

(hands the cup back to Austin) You know, I’m not really that thirsty after all.

Becca:

Just try it, Melissa. You’ll like it.  I promise.

Melissa:

Maybe later.

Mike:

Don’t you want to have fun?
