Summary:

Sam, a young boy, has his heart set on buying his friend Jimmy's old skateboard.  The only problem is Sam doesn't have all the money.  When Sam asks for an advance on his allowance, his dad is hesitant but in the end agrees if Sam promises to do a few extra chores to earn the money.  Once Sam gets the money he needs, he's on his way to buy the skateboard, but along the way, he sees a new helmet in the store that he just has to have.  After buying the helmet, he doesn't have enough money to pay Jimmy, but promises to pay back the rest of the money at a later date, not realizing Jimmy can't get his new skateboard until he has all the money from Sam.  Pretty soon, Sam finds himself in a bit of a "pickle:" the store won't take back the helmet, and Sam doesn't want to tell his parents what he has done.  In the end, Sam learns a hard lesson from his dad.

As the scene opens, Sam and his dad are at the kitchen table finishing breakfast.

Sam:

(somewhat hesitant)  Dad?

Don:

Yes, son...

Sam:

Can I have my allowance for this month, today?

Don:

Sam, I don't get paid until next week and that's when I pay you and your sister for the chores you've done. Did you remember to take out the trash?

Sam:

(sighing) Yes...it's just that Jimmy has a skateboard he's selling and I told him I wanted it. It's only $20.

Don:

Well, how much do you have saved?

Sam:

(looking down at his cereal bowl)  Five dollars.

Don:

Then I guess you will have to tell Jimmy you can't buy it until next week when you get your allowance. Did you sort the recycling yesterday?

Sam:

Yes, dad. So far I have done all my chores this month so I should get $20 from you next week...but I already told Jimmy I'd buy it from him today. I didn't want him to sell it to anyone else. Can I pleeeeeease have my allowance a week early? I'll work extra hard this week, I promise.

Don:

You shouldn't have told Jimmy you'd buy it today. You knew when you would get your allowance.

(Sarah walks in with her purse and keys in hand)

Sarah:

What's all this whining I here?  (rustling the hair on top of Sam's head)

Sam:

(frustrated) Mom, STOP. I asked Dad if I could have my allowance a week early so that I could buy that skateboard from Jimmy I told you about.

Sarah:

Hmmmm...well, I take it that didn't go like you had hoped. (Looking at Sam) He's done a good job keeping up with his chores this month, Don. And, I could use some help running errands this morning. Maybe a little extra work to earn the advance?

Don:

I guess. But remember, you still have a full week's worth of chores to do and you have to help Mom with her errands this morning.

Sam:

Thanks Dad! (Hugging Don) I'm ready when you are Mom! (Sam jumps up from the table)

Sarah:

We'll be back in a little bit; Danielle's up in her room playing.

Don:

See you in a bit.

Sarah and Sam exit the stage; Don exits the opposite side as if leaving the kitchen. Sarah and Sam re-enter the stage and sit bags of groceries on the kitchen table.

Sarah:

We're hoooommme!

Sam:

Here I'll put that away, Mom (Sam takes a bag from his mom)

Sarah:

I really appreciated your help this morning. It's always nice to have an extra set of hands. (Don walks into the kitchen) He's earned his pay, Don.

Don:

(opening his wallet) Here's $20. Now, next week when I pay your sister you won't get paid. Do you understand?

Sam:

Yes. Thanks Dad...and, Mom! Can I call Jimmy now?

Sarah:

Why don't you wait until after lunch.

Sam:

(disappointed) Okay.

Don:

You can help Mom put away the rest of the groceries and I will go tell Danielle it's time for lunch. (Don exits stage.)

Next scene - Sam appears to be walking down the street on the way to Jimmy's house and sees something in a store window that catches his eye. He enters the store.

Storekeeper:

Can I help you?

Sam:

How much is that helmet in the window?

Storekeeper:

The red one or the blue one?

Sam:

The red one.

Storekeeper:

It's on sale for $9.50. They’re discontinuing it...would you like to look at it?

Sam:

Yeah, that would be great. I'm getting a new skateboard and it would be perfect.

The storekeeper hands Sam the helmet. Sam looks it over and hands it back.

Sam:

Thanks, I'll have to think about it.

Storekeeper:

No problem, we are open til 6 tonight.

Sam:

Thanks.

Sam leaves the store and sits on a bench outside the store. He pulls out his wallet and counts the money out loud.

Sam:

10, 20, 5...I have $25. If I buy the helmet that leaves $15 for Jimmy. Maybe he'll sell it to me for less? I really want the helmet AND the skateboard. I'll make it work.

Sam goes back into the store and purchases the helmet and leaves carrying the bag with a smile on. He walks off stage and re-enters from the other side to appear as though he walked into Jimmy's neighborhood. He stops at a set of front porch steps  (or a stoop) and Jimmy comes out.

Jimmy:

Hey Sam!

Sam:

Hey! Look what I got to go with the skateboard. (pulls red helmet out of the bag to show Jimmy)

Jimmy:

Cool! So you brought your money?

Sam:

(enthusiastically) Yep! I've got $15.

Jimmy:

(confused)  But I thought we decided on $20?

Sam:

Oh, I'm sorry. (trying to act surprised) Well, all I've got is $15 today. I can get you the other $5 next week.

Jimmy:

I guess that will be OK. (Disappointed, Jimmy takes the skateboard off the porch and hands it to Sam) My Grandma is helping me buy a new skateboard.

Sam:

Awesome, can't wait to see it! Thanks man! This is so cool.! I'll get you the rest of the money next week, I promise!
