Themes: The miracles of Jesus; fishers of men; Jesus walking on the water; Jesus feeding the 5,000; marveling at who Jesus is; questioning the identity of Jesus
Categories: Youth, Children, Topical, Bible Characters
Summary:

According to a school of fish, some strange things have been going on in the sea since a man named Jesus came to town: fish are purposesly jumping into nets, loaves of bread are multiplying, men are walking on water, and there is strange talk of "fishing for men."  Wondering what's going on, several fish gather at the home of Koi, the oldest and wisest Japanese fish, to see if he has any insights as to what has been happening. As the fish recall the events they have each seen over the last few days, the only one who doesn't seem to be totally hooked is a catfish named Fluffy.  But there just might be something that can change his mind: an eye-witness account of his own.

Setting: At the home of a fish who lives in the sea.  The stage can be as simple or elaborate as desired. No elaborate costumes are necessary, just something simple like fins perhaps, to indicate these characters are fish.

As the scene opens, several fish are gathered to speak to a wise elder Japanese fish named Koi (pronounced like “coy” and rhymes with “boy.”) When Koi speaks, he will speak in short, disconnected sentences, like you would see in a Chinese or Japanese film.

All but Koi are on stage as the skit begins.

The fish waiting to speak to Koi are: Beta (pronounced ‘bay-tuh’) who is a beautiful lady fish; Billy Bass, a big, blabber-mouthed fish who has been known to spread false rumors; Fluffy, a skeptical male catfish embittered that he was named Fluffy; Goldie, a young, impressionable female fish; and Perch, a local look-out fish.

Billy Bass:

(to Perch) Perch, are you sure he knows we were coming?

Perch:

Of course he knows.  Koi knows everything.

Fluffy:

(sarcastic) He should.  He’s as old as dirt.

Beta:

I like Koi.  I think he’s the smartest, kindest fish I’ve ever met.

Fluffy:

But he’s as old as the sea. By the time he finally gets his fins in here I’ll be floating belly up somewhere.

Beta:

What a terrible thing to say!

Billy Bass:

Ah, don’t mind him, Beta, he’s just grumpy ‘cause some little girl on the river banks named him Fluffy.

Fluffy:

Stop calling me that! (getting angry, standing up, taking great offense) Do I look like a “Fluffy” to you?

Goldie:

(smiling) Well, you are a catfish.  I think it’s kind of cute.

Fluffy:

No one asked for your opinion, Goldie. (sitting back down, continuing to be grouchy) I don’t know what we’re doing here anyway.

Beta:

We’re here to seek the wisdom of Koi, the wisest fish in the sea.

Perch:

Yeah, we want to know what’s up with this new guy in town, Jesus.

Fluffy:

What’s Jesus got to do with anything?

Goldie:

A lot of strange things have been happening around these parts since he showed up.

Fluffy:

Hmmpf…(shaking his head) …I think it’s all a bunch of hooey.  Not a drop of truth to any of it!

Goldie:

You take that back.  There is too!

Fluffy:

Who says?

Billy Bass:

I do!

Fluffy:

Big Mouth Billy Bass?  You’ve definitely got the biggest mouth in town but I wouldn’t say a lot of truth ever comes out of it.

Billy Bass:

I know I may have told some fibs in the past guys but this time it’s the honest truth.  I promise! I seen it with my own eyes!

Fluffy:

(dismissing him) Bah!

Perch:

I think he really is telling the truth.  I’ve seen some strange things too.

Koi enters very slowly, taking small steps, as if to indicate he is old and slow. He speaks in disconnected words and sentences.

Koi:

What see?

Billy Bass:

(rushing to aid Koi and bring him to a seat) Lots of things, Sir. Things we can’t explain.

Beta:

That’s why we’re here.  We were hoping you could tell us what’s going on and what we should do.

Koi:

(now seated) Tell Koi what know.

Beta:

Why don’t you start, Perch?  You were one of the first to see Jesus in action.  Tell Koi about what you saw that morning.

Perch:

Okay. Well, I couldn’t sleep the night before. There were these guys in a boat that kept me awake all night.  They were trying to catch some fish by putting their nets in the water.

Beta:

But they didn’t catch a single fish, did they Perch?

Perch:

Nope. I was kind of laughing to myself because of their terrible luck. They finally gave up and were heading home.  They were washing their nets in the water first.

Beta:

The fish were too smart for ‘em, that day werent’ they Perch?

Perch:

Yeah, at first.  But then something happened.

Goldie:

(a little leery) What happened?

Perch:

I heard a voice.

Goldie gasps

Fluffy:

(sarcastic) Oooohh!  Call the fish police everyone—he heard a voice!

Billy Bass:

(to Fluffy) Shhh! Let him finish.

Perch:

You don’t understand, it wasn’t just any voice.

Goldie:

It was his voice, wasn’t it?

Perch:

Yeah, it was the voice of this guy Jesus.  He was encouraging the fishermen not to give up but to row a little further out and put their nets down again.

Koi:

What happen?

Perch:

They rowed a little further out and put their nets down again.

Fluffy:

(makes snoring sounds) This story is fascinating!

Beta:

Would you let him talk? Wait til you hear what happened after that.  Go ahead, Perch.

Perch:

It was the strangest thing.  The waters were quiet that whole morning; there wasn’t a fish in sight, and then all of a sudden as soon as those nets hit the water, BAM! There were fish everywhere, jumping over each other, fighting with one other to get into those nets!

Goldie:

(grabbing on to Billy Bass) I’m scared!

Fluffy:

No way! No fish in their right mind would purposefully jump into a net!

Billy Bass:

If that’s the way Perch says it happened, then that’s how it happened.

Goldie:

(to Perch) Is that really how it happened, Perch?

Perch:

(shaking his head) Yes.  I’ve never seen anything like it.

Koi:

Good fishermen.

Perch:

That’s what’s so strange: I don’t think they were good fishermen. Those guys weren’t catching anything and then Jesus shows up and then it’s like the fish were under a spell or something.  They were totally hooked!

Beta:

Didn’t you tell me the nets were so heavy they were breaking and the boat was so full of fish it began to sink?

Perch:

Yeah.  And what’s even stranger is that Jesus told the guys to stop what they were doing and follow him.  He said from now on they were going to be fishers of men.

Goldie:

Fishers of men?  What does that mean?

Billy Bass:

(to Koi) Koi?

Koi:

Fisher of men need large fishing pole.

Fluffy:

(to Koi) You’re not really buying all this, are you, Sir?

Perch:

Are you calling me a liar?

Fluffy:

If the fin fits!
