Father Figures-Drama Skit

Themes: Father's Day; Memories of growing up with fathers; How fathers influence and shape the lives of their children; Fatehrs being good examples for their children
Categories: Family, Father's Day
Summary:

Ranging from a young girl, to teenagers, to adult men and women, a group of children reflect on memories of growing up with their dad in a series of short monologues.  A young girl says her dad "is the bestest daddy in the whole world" and that he "makes itty bitty pancakes" that are small, just like her.  A teen boy has to admit that he thinks his dad is a pretty good guy and is even "cool," although he doesn't want his dad to know it; while a teen girl simply adores her father and the special "date nights" they often have. An adult male reflects on life without his dad, as his father died when the son was only a young boy, and another adult man says his life wouldn't be the same if it weren't for the advice and teachings of his dad.  A grown woman says her dad taught her how to have self-worth and showed her the way a man should treat a woman by treating her mother like a queen.  Finally, a wife appreciates her husband's commitment, both to her and to their family, which  makes them all feel"secure."  At the end, each character thanks all the fathers in the audience and admonishes that "Children are the clothes of a man, so may you each be dressed well."

Setting: Bare stage.

As the skit opens, the stage is empty.  The Young Girl enters and speaks to audience center stage.

Young Girl:

(enters, carrying a doll in her arms)  My daddy is the best daddy in the whole world! He tickles me and he makes these really funny faces that always make me laugh.

And oh yeah, he's the bestest pancake-maker ever! He gets up early on Sundays and fixes pancakes for everyone, only mine are more special 'cause they're itty bitty ones (she holds her fingers in the shape of a small circle) just like me.

Daddy likes to play games with me too and, don't tell him I said so, (looks around to make sure he isn't anywhere in sight) but he's not very good at it - I win every time, no matter what game we play.  Daddy says I must be a genius.  (she smiles real big and shrugs her shoulders) What can I say? He's probably right!

My favorite part of the day is when Daddy tucks me in at night.  He makes up these silly stories and we talk for awhile. Then we pray together and he kisses me on the cheek and says, "I'll see ya' in the morning, glory."  And I don't even know what that means 'cause my name isn't "Glory."  But it doesn't matter 'cause my dad is the best dad in the whooooole world!

She takes a few steps backward, then walks towards the side of the stage and stands with her back to the audience.  As she's doing this, Teen Boy enters and speaks to the audience at center stage.

Optional: During the transition of Young Girl to Teen Boy, a narrator can read a scripture:  "Sons (and daughters) are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.  Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth.  Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate." Psalms 127:3

Teen Boy:

(speaks to audience at center stage) My dad says I remind him a lot of himself when he was my age.  (smiling, and playfully arrogant) So obviously my dad was charming, good looking, athletic, and highly intelligent!

But seriously though, I don't want to say this too loud because if my dad ever heard me I'd never hear the end of it, but...(hesitates as he looks around to see if anyone is listening)... I think my dad is actually kind of cool.  Not as cool as me of course, but cool in "dad" way.

Do you know that he has been to every one of my basketball games? Every one. I told him he doesn't have to come, especially to the "away" games but he said he doesn't mind-he wants to be there to see his son play.  To his face, I play it smooth like it's no big deal, but secretly, I'm glad he's there.

He's a pretty good guy, my dad. He has a lot of patience, which is good I guess, especially when you have a teenage son who is learning to drive. (smiles

My dad actually makes time to talk with me.   I know that may horrify a lot of kids my age, but I actually like it because my dad not only talks, he listens too.  He tries to understand what it's like to be a teenager in this world today and he knows I'm not perfect but he loves me anyway.

Just knowing that...well, it makes a difference.  I want my dad to be proud of me and when I'm faced with tough decisions when he's not around, it's still his voice I hear in my head, steering me in the right direction.

Yeah, my dad's all right....but shhh, don't tell him I told you!

As before, he takes a few steps backward, then walks towards the side of the stage and stands next to Young Girl, with his back to the audience.  As he's doing this, Teen Girl enters and speaks to the audience at center stage.

Optional: During the transition, a narrator can read a scripture:  "Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck."  Proverbs 1: 8-9

Teen Girl:

My mom once told me that the first man a girl ever falls in love with is her dad.  I guess Mom was right because as far back as I can remember, I've always wanted to be anywhere my dad was.
