Setting: The bridal suite of a hotel room.

As the scene opens, a newlywed couple rushes into the room, obviously very happy.

Dennis:

We did it!

Carol:

We're finally married!

Dennis:

Things are going to be so great from now on, Carol!  I promise that I'll always be there for you whenever you need me.

Carol:

(gushes) Oh Dennis, that is so sweet!  And I'll always be there for you too.  No matter what.  You'll never have to be alone again.

Dennis:

And I want you to know that I'll always take care of you.  You'll never have to worry about the future, Carol, not even for one day of our life together.

Carol:

My knight in shining armor!

Dennis:

My beautiful princess!

Carol:

Promise me it will always be like it is today, Dennis.  Promise me we'll never lose this feeling.

Dennis:

I promise.

Carol:

Promise me we'll never argue or drift apart.

Dennis:

I promise with all of my heart.

Carol:

Oh Dennis, we're going to have such a perfect life. I love being married!

Dennis:

Me too.  Now, come here and let's get this honeymoon started!

Carol:

You read my mind.

As Carol moves toward Dennis, the sound of moaning and chains rattling is heard from offstage

Carol:

(concerned, she backs away from Dennis) What was that?

Dennis:

I don't know.  (pause for a moment) Whatever it was I guess it's gone now. (he moves closer, reaching for Carol again) Now, where were we?

The sound of chains moaning and rattling is heard again

Dennis:

(talking to the air) Look, whoever is out there, could you please keep it down?  You're kind of spoiling the mood in here.

Marlee:

(still heard from offstage at this point, she speaks in a ghostly manner) Beware! Beware!

Dennis:

(to Carol, concerned) It may be a little too late to ask you this but you don't have any jealous old boyfriends who might be lurking around hoping to make you a widow tonight, do you?

Carol:

Of course not!

Marlee:

(still heard from offstage) Dennis!  Carol!  Beware!

Carol:

There's something about that voice. It sounds...

Dennis:

(interrupting) Scary...Creepy...

Carol:

(shakes her head) No... It sounds...familiar.

Marlee enters slowly, dressed in an old bathrobe, pajamas and slippers. Some of her hair is in curlers and the rest looks unkempt and straggly.  Around her waist and/or carried behind her is a long chain.

Carol:

(upon seeing Marlee, Carol is frightened and screams-she hides behind Dennis)  Who are you?

Marlee:

Don't you recognize me, Carol?

Carol:

(peeking around Dennis, she gasps) Aunt Marlee?  Is that you?

Marlee:

The one and only.

Carol:

You sound like her.  (coming out from behind Dennis, she gets closer to Marlee to "examine" her) But you don't look like her.

Marlee:

What do you expect?  I've been dead for six years.

Dennis:

(getting queasy) Did you say....dead?

Marlee:

Yep.

Carol:

(to Dennis) This is the Aunt I told you about, remember?

Dennis:

But Carol....she's dead

Carol:

Dennis is right Aunt Marlee, you are dead. I was there when they buried you.  So, how can this be?  What are you doing here?

Marlee:

I was given the opportunity to come back and warn you, sweetie.  To warn both of you.

Carol:

Warn us about what?

Marlee:

The seasons of marriage.

Carol:

Well, if anyone would know about marriage it would be you.  (to Dennis) She was married eight times.

Marlee:

Nine.

Dennis:

(surprised) Nine?

Marlee:

Everyone always forgets about Philippe, my second husband, on account of we were only married for a month. But oh, what a month, if you know what I mean!

Carol:

(confused) I'm afraid I don't understand.  Dennis and I don't need any kind of warnings.  We just got married. We're in love and we always will be. Right honey?

Dennis:

Right.  Nothing can come between us. (to Marlee) So, I'm sorry, Aunt Marlee but it looks like you've come a long way for nothing.

Marlee:

I know you don't understand this now but you will.  And believe me, you'll thank me later.

Dennis:

Thank you for what?

Marlee:

Dennis, Carol, tonight you are going to be haunted by the Four Seasons.

Dennis:

(hopeful) The singing group?

Marlee:

No.

Carol:

(hopeful) The four star hotel?

Marlee:

No.  The Four Seasons of Marriage.

Carol:

Never heard of 'em.

Dennis:

(starting to worry) Now, when you say "haunted" what does that mean exactly?

Marlee:

Just as the seasons in nature change, so do the seasons of marriage.  Some days will be up; some days will be down.  That's marriage.  But I'll let the Four Seasons explain all that.

Carol:

Look Aunt Marlee, I know you're just trying to help but believe me, everything is fine.   Dennis and I...

Marlee:

...love each other.  Yes, I know.  But the honeymoon won't last forever. Eventually real life will creep in. You see these chains?  (points to them) These are the strings of broken relationships I left behind in life.

Dennis:

That's a lot of strings!

Marlee:

And every one of them was filled with love...in the beginning.  Loving someone through the summer is the easy part; keeping that love alive in the midst of a cold, harsh winter takes some work.  It's something I never quite mastered I'm afraid.

Carol:

You're not making any sense Aunt Marlee.

Marlee:

I know, dear. But you'll see.  I just don't want you to end up like me, alone and miserable, never giving marriage a real chance.

Carol:

Maybe you just never found the right person.

Dennis:

Right.  (taking Carol's hand) Being with the right person makes all the difference.

Marlee:

(shaking her head) If only it were that simple.  Well, you can't say I didn't warn you.  Just promise me you'll give the Seasons a chance.

Dennis:

What if we don't want to?

Marlee:

Then you'll end up like me: divorced and disillusioned, and you'll probably die alone, destined to carry the weight of your foolishness behind you throughout all eternity.

Dennis:

Oh.  (to Carol) I think we should give them a chance.  Don't you think, honey?

Carol:

(Carol nods her head in agreement, then to Marlee) We promise Aunt Marlee.  When can we expect... our guests?

Marlee:

Any time now.  It was good to see you again, Carol.  Nice to meet you, Dennis.  Take care of each other.  And remember what I said: give your marriage the chance it deserves. (she exits, pulling her chains behind her)
