Categories: Halloween, Topical, Life Situations, Youth
Summary:

Somehow, teenage girl Holly has talked her friend Vanessa into watching a scary horror flick, and now, frightened and upset, Vanessa regrets it.  While Vanessa is nearly scared to death, Holly claims she isn't bothered by such things.  That is, until several eerie events begin to occur:  the phone continues to ring even though the cord has obviously been severed; odd creaking noises are heard coming from the attic; an axe is found in the living room; random slow knocking is heard at the front door; and a man in a Friday the 13th mask slowly opens the door.  The girls have convinced themselves a serial killer is on the loose and that they will soon be chopped to bits! However, when the masked man turns out to be Holly's brother home from his hockey game, the girls quickly learn there is a simple and non-threatening explanation for all the occurrences that have taken place that evening.  In the end, the girls learn that what you put into your mind will ultimately affect your thoughts and actions.

Setting: A girl's sleepover.

As the scene opens, it should appear two teen girls are watching a scary movie on t.v. Both girls are in their pajamas, but Vanessa is curled up as tight as possible on the couch, clutching a pillow to her chest, her head buried in the top of the pillow. Holly is intently watching the movie and seems wide-eyed.

Vanessa:

(holding her head up to speak to Holly, but her eyes are tightly shut as she speaks) Is it over yet?

Holly:

Almost.

Vanessa:

(eyes still shut) I hate scary movies!

Holly:

(still watching t.v. intently) He caught her! (gasps loudly) Oh my gosh!

Vanessa:

(opens her eyes cautiously and looks at the t.v.-she screams) He ripped her eye out of the socket! (closes her eyes tightly again, and begins rocking back and forth with the pillow clutched tightly to her) I hate this!  I can't believe I let you talk me into watching this!

Holly:

It's just a movie, Vanessa.

Vanessa:

I don't want to see it anymore!

Holly:

It's not even real.  That was probably a grape or something.

Vanessa:

I don't care.  Turn it off!

Holly:

Okay, okay.  (she grabs a remote and points it at the t.v.) It was basically over anyway.  You can look now.

Vanessa:

Are you sure?

Holly:

I'm sure.

Vanessa:

(skeptically opens one eye and peeks, and then opens the other one-she gives Holly a "dirty" look) I told you I didn't like scary movies. I'm probably going to have nightmares for a week because of that.

Holly:

Don't you think you're a little old to believe in the "boogey man?"

Vanessa:

I just don't like filling my mind with all that stuff, okay?  It gives me the creeps.

Holly raises up her arms and makes a scary kind of "ghostly" noise, as she hovers over Vanessa

Vanessa:

(slapping Holly's arms away, obviously bothered) Stop it!

Holly:

(realizing the seriousness of Vanessa's request, she immediately stops) Hey, you're shaking.  You weren't kidding, were you?  You really do get freaked out by this stuff.

Vanessa:

Don't you?

Holly:

Nah.  I don't let that stuff bother me.  It goes in one ear and out the other.

Vanessa:

Are you sure?

Holly:

Yeah.  I know none of it's real.  So, what do you want to do now?

Vanessa:

Let's play a game or something.  Anything to get my mind off that movie.

Holly:

Okay. Ooh, I've got a good one.  It's new and I've been dying to play it with you. I'll go get it. (she gets up and starts to exit)

Vanessa:

Holly?

Holly:

(stops and looks at Vanessa) Yeah?

Vanessa:

Could you please not say "dying"?

Holly:

(rolls her eyes) Good grief, Vanessa! (she exits)

A phone rings

Holly:

(shouts from off stage) Will you get that?  It's probably Jen.  She said she'd call tonight.

Vanessa:

(shouting back) Sure.  (talking to herself) Now, where's the telephone?

She looks around for a second or two, and finds it nearby-she picks it up to answer it

Vanessa:

Hello?

Phone keeps ringing

Vanessa:

Hello?

Phone continues to ring.  Vanessa is confused and finally holds the cord away from her ear, noticing the cord has been "cut" and is not attached to the phone.

Vanessa:

(immediately scared, she calls out to Holly) Holly!

Holly:

(off stage) What?

Vanessa:

Come here.  Quick!

Phone continues to ring, as Holly enters

Holly:

(speaking as she's entering) I told you to answer the phone, Vanessa.  What's the problem?

Vanessa:

This is the problem! (holds up the severed phone cord)

Holly:

(immediately concerned) What did you do to the phone?

Vanessa:

I didn't do anything!

Holly:

(a bit of fear in her voice) The cord has been cut.

Vanessa:

(also fearful) I know.

Holly:

(very afraid now) But it's still ringing!

Vanessa:

(very afraid) I know!

They look at each other and scream
