These Friends of Mine-Drama Skit

Themes: Friendship; characteristics of a friend; how to treat others; selfishness
Categories: Youth, Friendship, Children, Topical
Summary:

For Sarah's 12th birthday, she has invited several of her friends over for a slumber party but soon regrets her decision because of their behavior.  Armed with a remote control, the skit unfolds through the eyes of Sarah's older sister, Betsy, who pauses and rewinds the characters, so the audience can see firsthand what has driven Sarah to tears.  According to Betsy, Sarah is the kind of person "who actually does all those good things we learn in Sunday School."  Too bad her friends don't do the same: Tiffany is a spoiled girl who manipulates and controls to get her way; Twyla lives to agitate Tiffany, who also happens to be her older sister; Amber is Tiffany's advocate and allows her to get away with everything; and Chris tries to do the right thing but when push comes to shove, she always give in.  Sarah hopes her good examples of friendship will rub off on her friends but so far, it doesn't seem to be working.  Soon Betsy takes matters into her own hands, and finds a way to use the remote control to help out her sister permanently.

Setting:  A girl's sleepover.  Monopoly and other games, hair brushes, sleeping bags and pillows etc., should be on stage to resemble what a living room might look like if a group of girls were having a slumber party.  All the girls should be dressed in their pajamas.

As the scene opens, all the characters are positioned as follows, but they are in a "frozen" position.  Nobody moves.  Tiffany and Twyla are to the right of center stage, each has a hold on a pillow, as if they are both trying to grab it for herself.  Amber stands next to Tiffany with her finger pointing directly at Twyla, in an accusing manner.  Chris is to the left of center stage.  She has her head down with her hand over her eyes.  Sarah is also to the left of the stage, near Chris holding out a blanket in the direction of Tiffany. Betsy sits comfortably in a chair on center stage with a remote in her hands.  If the chair has arms, Betsy dangles her legs over the side of the chair.

At various times throughout the script, Betsy points the remote on various characters and clicks.  These characters will "freeze" and "unfreeze" accordingly.

Betsy:

(seated in her chair, speaks directly to the audience) Slumber parties are fun, aren't they?  (she points the remote in the direction of Tiffany and Twyla)

Tiffany and Twyla "unfreeze," each pulling the pillow to herself

Tiffany:

(to Twyla, pulling the pillow hard) Give me the pillow!

Twyla:

No.  It's mine! (she pulls it to herself)

Tiffany:

I need a pillow!   (she pulls it back to herself)

Twyla:

Then I guess you should have brought one!   (she pulls it back)

Betsy aims the remote at Tiffany and Twyla and presses the remote-they both freeze

Betsy:

That's Tiffany and Twyla. (indicating the two girls) They're sisters, and they fight all the time.  (she aims the remote and the two girls unfreeze again)

Tiffany:

I asked you to get one for me, remember?

Twyla:

And I did bring one for you.  It's over there.  (points to a pillow on the floor)

Tiffany:

(crinkles her nose in disgust) I can't use that one.  It's flat.

Twyla:

So?  It's better than nothing at all.

Tiffany:

You know I have a sensitive bone structure.  If I use that one (indicating the other pillow) I'll wake up looking like the Hunchback of Notre Dame!

Twyla:

So fold it in half.  It's only for one night.  I think you'll survive.

Tiffany:

Then you use the flat one and fold it half. I need this one.  Now, give it! (she pulls hard on the pillow)

Twyla:

No! (she pulls equally hard) This is my pillow!

Tiffany:

(turns to Amber) What do you think Amber?

Betsy aims the remote towards Amber and clicks and Amber unfreezes

Amber:

(pointing her finger at Twyla) You did this on purpose!

Betsy clicking the remote again, Amber, Tiffany and Twyla freeze

Betsy:

(to audience) Hmmm, Amber taking Tiffany's side....now there's a big shock!  Amber always takes Tiffany's side.  Whatever Tiffany wants, Amber gets for her.  Whatever Tiffany says, Amber does.  Whatever Tiffany feels, Amber agrees.  (she clicks the remote and the characters come to life again)

Tiffany:

(turns back to Twyla) You did do this on purpose!

Twyla:

Why would I do it on purpose?

Betsy:

(clicks remote, characters freeze as speaks to audience) She probably did.  Twyla's sole mission in life to annoy her sister. (she clicks the remote and characters unfreeze)

Amber:

Because you're jealous!

Twyla:

Of what?

Tiffany:

Of my beauty and popularity!

Twyla:

(laughs hysterically) You wish!

Betsy aims and clicks the remote to Chris, and all the characters come to life now.  From now on, they freeze when Betsy speaks to the audience and unfreeze when she is finished.

Chris:

Hey guys, let's not fight.  We're supposed to be having fun, remember?

Betsy:

(speaks to audience) That's Chris.  She's a nice enough person.  She tries to do the right thing but when push comes to shove, she always gives in.  If you look up "mammals with no backbone" in the dictionary, Chris's picture would be front and center.

Tiffany:

(turning to Chris) Do you think it's fair that I have to sleep on that sorry excuse of a pillow just because my sister didn't have the decency to bring me my own feather pillow from home?

Chris:

(to Twyla) She does have a point, Twyla.

Betsy:

(to audience)  See?

Twyla:

Well, maybe if big sis here wanted her own pillow she could have gotten off of her sorry rump and gotten it herself!

Sarah:

(picks up a different pillow and walks to Tiffany, handing it to her) Here Tiffany, you can use mine.  It's really fluffy.  I've always gotten a good night's sleep with it.  I'll use the flat one.

Twyla:

You don't have to do that.

Sarah:

Like you said, it's only for one night, right?  I'll be okay.

Betsy:

(speaks to audience) That's my sister, Sarah.  She's really a sweet person.  She's one of those people who actually does all those good things we learn in Sunday School.

Tiffany:

(gives Twyla a "haughty" smile, speaks to Sarah) Why thank you, Sarah.  It's nice to know some people have manners and know how to treat a friend.  (to Chris and Amber) Why didn't one of you give me your pillow?

Chris and Amber look at each other shocked, with their mouths open but not knowing what to say

Betsy:

(to audience) It's been like this all night.  You should have been here earlier.
