He Has Risen-Drama Skit

He Has Risen-Drama Skit

Themes: Easter, the resurrection, Jesus is alive, the tomb is empty
Categories: Easter
Summary:

This skit picks up soon after the crucifixion of Jesus, and is told through the eyes of John, the beloved disciple.  John and Peter are contemplating how such a tragic event could have happened and why Jesus didn't stop it, even though he had the power to do so.  In the midst of their discussion, Mary Magdalene rushes in claiming Jesus is not in the tomb.  Later, we discover Jesus has risen from the grave, and he appears to Mary and the other disciples.  He talks to them of how he will send a comforter and that they should preach and teach in his name.  In the end, Jesus makes his ascension to heaven.

Notes:

This skit can be used by itself or it can be used in conjunction with the skit "It is Finished."  Typically, the skit 'It is Finished" would be used on Palm Sunday and "He Has Risen" would be used on Easter Sunday.  Or the two of them could be used on the same Easter Sunday.

Setting: After Jesus resurrection, near the tomb. On stage is a table with a sheet neatly folded, and several strips of cloth.

As the scene opens, John and Peter stand in front of the stage.

John:

(speaking to the audience) It was the darkest day of my life: the day Jesus died. The days leading up to his death almost seemed like a blur--everything happened so fast.  I was in shock.  We all were.  But I could never have predicted what was still to come. (he steps back and talks to Peter)

John:

I still can't believe what has happened, Peter.  How could they convict Jesus of those crimes?  You and I both know he was innocent.

Peter:

You know how the Pharisees hated him, John.  They saw their hold over the people slipping away and Jesus' popularity rising.  They had to do something to get rid of the threat he posed.

John:

But crucifixion? Jesus didn't deserve to die like that.  He didn't deserve to die at all!

Peter:

How is his mother doing?

John:

Not so well.  She took his death pretty hard.

Peter:

We all did.

John:

Not all of us.

Peter:

You mean Judas, don't you?

John:

Of course I do!  After all we've been through with Jesus, after all the time we spent with him...how could Judas betray him like that?  And for what, a few pieces of silver? I don't understand it.

Peter:

(hangs his head, ashamed) I do.  (long pause) Do you think...

John:

Of course he forgave you, Peter.  He loved you.

Peter:

I just wish things could have been different.  What are we supposed to do now?

John:

(steps forward to speak to the audience) That seemed to be the question on all of our minds.  For the last few years we had been by Jesus' side, learning from him, getting to know him.  We didn't always understand his purpose but we did know there was something special about him: the things he could do, the way he spoke, the way he felt about people.

But now he was gone.  We were left on our own and we didn't know what to do.  (he steps back)

Peter:

(smiles) Hey, do you remember that time we were going to the temple and those men were selling goats and cattle in there like it was a market place?

John:

(smiles) Yeah.  Jesus wasn't very happy about that, was he?  He let them have it!

Peter and John both laugh

Peter:

(getting serious) I wonder why he didn't do anything to save himself.  He could have, you know.  You've seen what he can do.  Why didn't he stop what was happening to him?

John:

I don't know.  I guess we'll never know.

Mary enters running from the side or back aisle. She is hysterical, crying and shouting.

Mary:

He's gone! They've taken him!

Peter:

(trying to calm her) Mary, what is it?

Mary:

They've taken him!

Peter:

Who?

Mary:

Jesus!

John:

What are you talking about Mary?  Who has taken him?

Mary:

I don't know.  But he's not there.  I went to the tomb where they laid him and he's gone and I don't know where they've taken him!

Peter:

This doesn't make any sense.

John:

Let's check it out!

All three of them run on stage, John in the lead.  John arrives on stage near the table first.  John stands a few feet away from the table, and "looks in." After a moment Mary and Peter join him on stage.

John:

(to Peter) The stone has been rolled away. There's no on here.

Peter:

There has to be!  Let me see.  (he moves past John and stands next to the table.  He sees the sheet on the table and picks it up, then speaks to John) There's nothing here but the linens they wrapped him in.
