Enter Into His Gates-Drama Skit

Enter Into His Gates-Drama Skit

Themes: Thanksgiving; Thankfulness; Psalm 100; Being thankful in all circumstances; Thanking God for his blessings
Categories: Youth, Thanksgiving, Spiritual Growth, Children
Summary:

Based on Psalm 100: "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."

With a funny take on the Psalm, a group of students misinterpret the overall meaning and "heart" of the scripture, as they are all waiting to enter into His gates and courts:

-Fred is dressed as a pilgrim and has a picnic basket full of thanksgiving dinner items because he can't think of "entering his gates with thanksgiving" with any more spirit than this

-Fiona feels giving praise means showering those around her with compliments

-Sherry goes overboard in her thankfulness, being thankful from everything from her feet to how wonderfully a basket is woven

-Louis is dressed and ready to play basketball because he thinks God's "courts" are basketball courts, while Barb is ready to play tennis, and Kurt is preparing a case for a courtroom

-Leah randomly shouts out strange but silly words, while trying to make joyful noises

-And Ben sings crazy songs at random because he believes he should enter God's presence with singing

Meanwhile, Mona is trying quietly to read a book, but when she notices her friends acting "nuts" she feels it necessary to step in and set them straight on the TRUE meaning of the scriptures.  But the friends aren't buying it and think she's the crazy one for not being fully prepared.

Notes:

A fun skit, perfect for a children or youth Thanksgiving program!

Although this skit was written with a more youthful audience in mind, with a few minor word changes, it could also easily be played by adults, perhaps with even more laughs.

Excerpt (Sample)

Fred:

I'm starving!  When do we eat?

Ben:

 (sings) "B-I-N-G-O. B-I-N-G-O. B-I-N-G-O. And Bingo was his name-o. "

Sherry:

I am so thankful for music.

Louis:

He runs... (bounces the basketball and does a few basketball maneuvers with his feet) He shoots... (picks up the ball as if to shoot)
He scores!  And the crowd goes wild! (dances around in victory)

Kurt:

In the case of David versus Goliath, it has been shown that David was the victor, defeating Goliath with one small stone ejected from a slingshot.

Leah:

Wassabi!

Barb:

Now serving... 30/Love. (she raises her racket in the air and pretends to "serve" the ball)

Fiona:

She's so good at that! (indicating Barb)

Sherry:

I'm very thankful for sports like tennis. It's entertaining to watch and provides great exercise.

Fred:

Where are all the other pilgrims?

Sherry:

I'm thankful for pilgrims.

Leah:

Gobsmacked!

Ben:

"There ain't no flies on me. There ain't no flies on me. There might be flies on some of you guys, but there ain't no flies on me!"

Leah:

Squeegee!

Mona:

(jumps up from her chair and puts her book down - she walks to where the others are gathered)  All right, that's it!  What's going on here?

Fred:

What do you mean?

Mona:

What do you mean, "What do I mean?" You guys are all acting completely nuts!

Kurt:

No we're not.

Mona:

Yes,  you are!  Now somebody please tell me what's going on!  What are you all doing here?

Fred:

Well, it's November, so we're waiting to enter into His gates with thanksgiving.

Louis:

And into His courts with praise.

Mona:

(still confused) What?

Fred:

You know... Psalm 100?  "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord."

Leah:

Which is what I'm doing: making joyful noises.  (shouts and smiles) Wonkynubbins!

Mona:

(perplexed) I don't think that quite what the Bible meant when it said...

Fred:

(interrupting) It also says to "enter into His gates with thanksgiving." I figured, what could be more like Thanksgiving than a pilgrim with a basket full of Thanksgiving dinner.  (opens the basket) I've got turkey & stuffing, with mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce and my mom's homemade pumpkin pie!

Mona:

(still perplexed) But that's not...

Louis:

And don't forget to "enter into His courts with praise. "

Fiona:

That's what I do best: praise people and give compliments.  I love your hair today, by the way.  It looks great!

Louis:

The only problem is we can't agree on what kind of courts God has.  I say it's a basketball court and we're gonna be shootin' some serious hoops!

Kurt:

I disagree completely!  God is all about obeying the law, so I say we should be prepared for a courtroom.

Barb:

But they all refuse to admit I'm the one who's right.  After all, the Bible does say to "Serve the Lord with gladness."  If it's not a tennis court, than I don't know what is!

Sherry:

The Psalm also says to "be thankful."  And I am soooo thankful! I'm thankful for my clothes, and for the mall, and for my closet full of shoes...

Ben:

(interrupts) But even more important than that is to "Come before his presence with singing."

(sings) "Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream." Everybody!

All except Mona:

(in unsion) "Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily life is but a dream!"

Kurt:

So, does that explain it?

Ben:

Do you understand now?

Mona looks more confused than ever

Barb:

Cause you don't look like you do.

Mona:

I think you guys are the ones who don't understand it!

Fred:

Oh yeah? Well, how do you plan on entering into his gates?

Kurt:

Or His courts.

Sherry:

Yeah, what did you bring? Not that I'm not thankful for your presence alone, cause I am.

Fiona:

But what are you doing?  Besides rockin that awesome outfit, that is!

Mona:

It's not about what I brought or what I'm doing right this second.  Thanksgiving isn't just a holiday for one time of year.  It should be something you carry in your heart all year long.
