Categories: Children, Topical
Summary:

Mom and Pop, owners of "Pop's Pizza Barn", are disappointed when their idea of a restaurant in a barn doesn't quite work out.  After months of very few customers, Mom and Pop feel it's time to throw in the towel and quit.  However, their kids don't quite agree.  When Sam and Kara start hearing a mysterious "voice" no one else can hear, they believe it belongs to God, and they think He's telling them not to close up shop.  Mom and Pop remain unconvinced, so the kids turn to their Italian baker, Luigi, for help who believes them and begins preparing the pizza.  When Pop begins smelling the pizza baking, he is furious, until a stranger walks into the restaurant.  Turns out, he's a famous country singer, who's tour bus broke down nearby, and wants his "crew" to hang out at the restaurant, eat lots of pizzas and perform a few songs.  Finally, Pop understands what his kids and Luigi have been trying to tell him:  "Trust in the Lord with your whole heart..."

Setting: Although no special scenery is required, the skit takes place in a pizza joint.  Perhaps a sign that says, “Pop’s Pizza Barn” could hang on the stage.

As the scene opens, Mom, Pop, Sam and Kara are on stage acting bored.

Pop:

Any sign of customers yet, Sam?

Sam:

(looks all around) Sorry, Pop.  The place is empty.

Pop:

(discouraged) As usual.

Mom:

(to Pop, encouraging) Don’t worry honey, I’m sure the lunch crowd will be in any minute now.

Kara:

Mom, it’s 3:00 in the afternoon.  I think the lunch crowd is over.

Mom:

(trying to be optimistic) Early dinner crowd?

Pop:

(exasperated) Kara’s right. Who are we kidding?  We haven’t had a crowd since the day we opened.

Sam:

We’ve barely even had more than one person!

Pop:

I guess it was a mistake to open a pizza shop so far outside of town.

Mom:

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Kara:

Yeah, we all loved the pizza barn idea!

Pop:

Yeah? Well, I think we’re the only ones.  Look around you, the place is deserted.

Mom:

I hate to say it but maybe we should think about closing the restaurant.

Sam:

No! Don’t give up yet, Pop.

Kara:

Yeah, maybe things will be better tomorrow.

Pop:

We’ve been saying that for months now.  I think your mother is right.  We need to close.

Mom:

Who’s gonna tell Luigi?  He’ll be heartbroken!

Pop:

I’ll do it.  (calls as if to someone off stage) Luigi, can you come here for a minute?

Before Luigi (the baker) enters, a mysterious Voice is heard from offstage.

Voice:

If you’re open, they will come.”

Kara:

(looking around) Who said that?

Mom:

Who said what, dear?

Kara:

That voice just now.  Who said that?

Pop:

That was me, calling to Luigi.

Sam:

No, I heard it too.

Pop:

I didn’t hear anything.

They all wait in silence for a moment but nothing happens

Mom:

I think you’re both imagining things.

Kara:

(to Sam) I really thought I heard something.

Sam:

(to Kara) Maybe it was just the wind.

Kara:

Maybe.

Luigi enters.  He is an Italian baker who speaks with an Italian accent

Luigi:

You wished to see a’me, boss? How can Luigi help’a you?

Pop:

I’m afraid I have some bad news.

Luigi:

What’s da matter? You no like’a my new pizza pie?

Pop:

No, you’re pizza is perfect! I just wish there were more people around to taste it.

Luigi:

Luigi know it will happen.  Just’a give it some’a time.

Mom:

That’s just it, Luigi, we’re out of time.

Luigi:

(to Pop) What she saying, Boss?

Pop:

I’m sorry to tell you we’re going to have to close our doors, permanently.

Luigi:

Close’a da restaurante (rest*uh*ront* ay)?  Say it isn’t’a so!

Pop:

I wish it weren’t but I’m afraid we don’t have the business I thought we would.

Luigi:

But you make’a Luigi so’a sad!

Voice:

(heard from off stage) “If you’re open, they will come.”

Kara:

There it is again!

Mom:

Kara, please don’t interrupt.

Kara:

But Mom, it’s the voice again!

Pop:

There is no voice.

Sam:

But I heard it too!

Pop:

Stop it. This is no time to be playing around.

Sam:

But I heard it! It said, “If you’re open, they will come.”

Kara:

(to Mom, Pop & Luigi) Didn’t any of you hear it?

Luigi:

Luigi a’hear nothing except the sound of his own’a tears!

Pop:

We better put the “closed” sign in the window.  (sarcastic) Not that anyone will see it.

Mom:

We should start packing up.

Mom and Pop exit

Luigi:

Luigi will help.  I canna’ believe the doors are closing for’a good! (dramatically bursts into tears, then exits)

Kara:

I think Mom and Dad are making a big mistake.  You heard the voice, “If you’re open, they will come.”

Sam:

Yeah, but what did it mean? Who are ‘they’?

Kara:

I don’t know.

Voice:

(from offstage) “If you make it, they will eat.”

Sam:

(looking around) Who’s saying that?

Kara:

Sam, I’ve got it!  I know what to do!

Sam:

What?

Kara:

It’s God!  He’s trying to tell us not to close the restaurant.  He’s saying that if we make a bunch of pizzas, people will come and eat them!

Sam:

(a bit skeptical) Are you sure? How could you get that from just a few words?

Voice:

(offstage) “If you make it, they will eat.”

Sam:

(to Kara) Okay, you’re sure!  So, what do we do?  Mom and Dad are set on closing the place.

Kara and Sam think for a moment, then look at each other and speak at the same time

Kara & Sam:

(in unison) Luigi!
