Summary:

In three separate situations, it appears "bad" things are happening to good people.  Steve has just gotten fired from his job; someone is spreading rumors that Monica's brother has embezzled her company's cash and she is filing for  bankruptcy; and a week before her wedding, Paula's finacee breaks off their engagement.  In their own way, each person has begun to wonder what's happening and how and why this fits into God's plan for their lives.  But then events begin to happen and suddenly, things don't look as bleak as they initially did.  In the end, each person learns about the power of God, and how "No weapon formed against you shall prosper."

Based on Isaiah 54:17.

Setting: Three small tables with three sets of chairs sits positioned a few feet apart on the stage.

As the scene opens, Tracy sits at the first table with a cell phone in hand; at the second table, Monica and Liz sit with plates and cups on the table in front of them as if in a restaurant; at the third table Paula sits reading a book.  All the characters are “frozen,” (nobody speaks or moves).

Narrator:

Though the mountains be shaken
   and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken
nor my covenant of peace be removed,”
says the LORD, who has compassion on you.  (Isaiah 54:10)

Tracy:

(“unfreezes,” talking on the cell phone) No Mom, I haven’t heard anything yet.  He’s on his way home now. (pause) Yeah, I know it will all work out somehow but I don’t know what we’re gonna do if… wait, I think he just pulled in.  I’ll call you later, Mom. (hangs up the phone)

Steve enters, carrying a box of office items

Tracy:

(worried, noticing the box) That doesn’t look good.

Steve:

Nope. (sets the box down on the table, and then sits) He fired me.

Tracy:

(shocked)  Can he do that?

Steve:

I guess so. He just did.

Tracy:

Just because you refused to be a part of one of his slimy mergers?

Steve:

No.  He was very careful to be clear it had nothing to do with that.

Tracy:

Then what grounds did he have to fire you?

Steve:

Technically, I’m not being fired, just “let go.”  He said it had something to do with cutbacks in general.  You know, the whole speech about how times are tough, branches all over are restructuring, outsourcing for cheaper labor…blah, blah, blah….

Tracy:

But that’s not true! He fired you because you don’t go along with his illegal schemes and unethical business practices.

Steve:

You and I know that, along with a handful of other people, but they’re afraid of losing their own jobs if they come forward.

Tracy:

So what are gonna do now?

Steve:

I don’t know. I’ve worked there for twelve years.  I just can’t believe this is happening.

Steve and Tracy “freeze” as Monica, and Liz begin talking.

Liz:

That was the best lemon chicken I’ve ever had but now I’m stuffed.  I ate way too much!

Monica:

Me too. Thank you so much for inviting me to lunch today.

Liz:

It was my pleasure.  Besides, it’s been nice getting to know you on a more personal level outside of church.

Monica:

I agree. You have no idea how much I needed this today. Now, if you’ll excuse me for just a minute, I need to use the ladies’ room.

Monica stands and exits as Helen enters.  Upon seeing Liz, Helen heads towards her.

Helen:

Hi Liz. Was that Monica Lynch I just saw?

Liz:

Yes. We’re having lunch today.

Helen:

I guess she told you about her situation then.  It’s really a shame.

Liz:

What situation?

Helen:

(getting excited) You mean you haven’t heard?

Liz:

No.

Helen:

Well, I really shouldn’t gossip but… (looking around, she quickly pulls out a chair and sits down) …let me tell you all about it. She’s filing for bankruptcy.

Liz:

(shocked) Bankruptcy? Are you sure?

Helen:

Oh yes. They had to.  I heard Monica’s brother was their accountant and he ran off with all their money.

Liz:

(sympathetic) That’s terrible!

Helen:

(seems to be enjoying this) Isn’t it though?  Can you imagine, your whole life’s savings, gone, (she snaps her fingers) just like that?  Of course, their credit is going to be shot but at least they’ll get to keep their home.  (looks to the side) Oh, she’s coming back. Gotta run!

Helen exits as Monica enters, then Liz and Monica“freeze”

Paula:

(looks heaven ward) Alright God, it’s been almost 4 months now since Michael broke off our engagement.  I’ve been trying to make sense of it all but I’m not doing a very good job.

I still don’t understand. What happened?  Why didn’t Michael love me enough?  And how could he do that to me a week before our wedding?

All I ever wanted to do was get married, become a nurse and serve you, God.  I know two out of three isn’t bad, but where did I go wrong with the married part?

Paula “freezes.”

Narrator:

If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing;
whoever attacks you will surrender to you.
See, it is I who created the blacksmith
who fans the coals into flame
and forges a weapon fit for its work. (Isaiah 54:15-16)

Tracy:

What’s the next step?

Steve:

I’m not sure. I didn’t even have a “plan B” because I thought for sure things were going to turn out differently at work.

Tracy:

You mean that the higher-ups would realize what a lying, cheating, conniving, manipulator Bob Hanson is and decide to fire him instead?

Steve:

Something like that, yeah.

Tracy:

Maybe they still will.
