Color My World at School-Drama Skit

Color My World at School-Drama Skit

Themes: Diversity; Black History; each person is unique and special; how people are alike; how people are different; picking on others because they are different
Categories: Youth, Children, Black History
Summary:

Jen and Casey are two youngsters who find playing games with just two people isn't that much fun, especially games like "tag" and "red rover." They are thrilled to hear more kids are on their way to play, however, they change their tune once they see them: one boy has a green face, another wears bright blue eye shadow, a girl is bright pink and has feathers in place of hair, and two kids have heads in the shape of a cone, not to mention one of them is orange! With such a "weird" mix, Jen and Casey decide there's no way they can play with these people.  "They're not normal!" But when an adult friend points out that we are all made differently for a reason and that being different isn't necessarily a bad thing, the kids begin to see their new-found friends in a whole new light. They begin to explore the uniqueness of each other, as well as discover that "deep down we're really not all that different.  We all have the same needs and wants."  Told with humor, this skit points out that diversity is all a part of the "big picture," and that you can't always judge people by what's on the outside.

Notes:

This skit was originally performed using puppets, but can be easily adapted for people.  This skit is also a replica of the religious skit "Color My World" although it has been adapted for use in schools, so any religious refernces and inferences have been removed.

Setting: The stage is bare—no special setting.

As the scene opens, Narrator enters.

Narrator:

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect.

It means understanding each individual is unique, and recognizing our differences.

It’s about understanding each other and moving beyond tolerance to embrace and celebrate the rich dimensions of diversity that are contained within each individual.

Whether race, gender, economic status, age, physical abilities or religious beliefs…it is in the exploration of these differences, and the acknowledgement of our similarities, that our journey begins.

Narrator exits, as Casey (a young boy) and Jen (a young girl) are playing Tag. They “run” from one side of the stage to the other, quickly tagging each other back and forth.

Casey:

(touching Jen’s arm) Tag, you’re “it.”

Jen:

(touching Casey’s arm) Tag, you’re “it.”

Casey:

(touching Jen’s arm) You’re “it.”

Jen:

(touching Casey’s arm) You’re “it.”

Jen starts to run then stops suddenly, as Casey runs into her back and bounces off

Jen:

This game isn’t much fun with just two people.  You want to play something else instead?

Casey:

How about Red Rover?

Jen:

(excited) Okay.  You go first.

Jen and Casey stand on opposite sides of the stage

Casey:

(calling out) Red Rover, Red Rover, send Jennifer right over!

Jen runs fast and pounces on Casey, knocking him completely over.  He gets up slowly, very dizzy.

Jen:

(happy) You’re right Casey, this is a lot more fun!

Casey:

(rubbing his head) For who?

Adult enters

Adult:

Here you are.  I’ve been looking all over for you two.  I have a surprise.

Jen:

(excited) I love surprises!  What is it?

Adult:

I brought some friends over to play with you today.

Casey:

Thank goodness! I don’t think my head could take another round of Red Rover.

Jen:

This means we can play a real game of tag now.  Where are they?

Adult:

I thought they were right behind me. (looking to the side) Oh, here they come.

Kyla ,Kreegle, Meesha, Pete and Noggin all enter. As they do, Jen and Casey stare in disbelief, looking from one new person to the other.

Kyla:

Hey there.  My name is Kyla.  It’s nice to meet you.

Kreegle:

Hi. I’m Kreegle. This here is Meesha and Pete. (indicates them both)

Meesha:

(in a southern accent) Hey y’all.

Pete:

(also in a southern accent) What’s shakin’ bacon?

Noggin:

(in a “surfer dude” voice) I’m Noggin.  It’s totally righteous to meet you.

Both Jen and Casey’s mouths drop wide open.

Casey:

(in a shaky, nervous, somewhat high-pitched voice) Will you…excuse us for just a minute?

Jen and Casey move closer to Adult and they speak to her in an “aside.” The others are oblivious as to what is being said.

Casey:

(unnerved) Where did you find these people!

Adult:

They’re friends of mine.

Casey:

There’s something seriously wrong with all of them.

Adult:

What do you mean “wrong” with them?

Casey:

Come on, that girl is bright pink…(pause) Pink!

Adult:

Okay, calm down.

Jen:

Is she sun- burned?

Adult:

No!

Jen:

Then why does she look like that?

Adult:

That’s the way she was made.  What’s the problem? She’s no different than you and me.

Casey:

(choking) Are you kidding? No different?  There’s feathers… (a bit frightened, in a funny way)…where her hair should be!  And they’re green!

Jen:

They match that boy’s face – his lime green face.

Adult:

Shh!  They’ll hear you.  I know they may all seem a little unusual at first but …

Jen:

(interrupting) Unusual?  Two of those kids are cone heads.  And one is orange!

Casey:

(to Jen) I know, right?  Someone needs to tell him, “Hey man, lay off the carrots for awhile!” And what’s up with…what was his name?

Adult:

Noggin.

Jen:

(laughs at the name) Noggin.  (hits herself in the head and laughs) Noggin!

Casey:

The dude is wearing blue eye shadow.

All three of them look at Noggin

Adult:

Yes.  Yes he is.

Jen:

(laughing) I’m sorry but we can’t possibly play with those guys.

Adult:

Why not?

Jen:

Because they’re… weird

Adult:

You don’t even know them, so why would you say that?

Casey:

Look at them.

Casey, Jen and Adult all look back at the others again. In return, Kyla, Kreegle, Meesha, Noggin and Pete all wave excitedly back.

Jen:

Plus they talk funny.

Casey:

There’s no way!  I’d rather play tag by myself than with those guys.

Jen:

Me too. So, thanks for bringing them, but no thanks.

Casey:

Yeah, we’re outta here!

Jen:

See ya later!

Casey and Jen quickly exit

Noggin:

(to Adult) Dude, are they coming back?

Adult:

(hesitant) Well…

Meesha:

Oh my, they don’t like us do they?

Kreegle:

It’s my head isn’t it?  It’s my fault they left. They hate the shape of my head!

Meesha:

It can’t be because of you, darlin’. Why the shape of your head is simply magnificent. I’m sure there must be some other reason.

Kyla:

Then it had to be me.

Meesha:

Seriously? With that beautiful skin and gorgeous mane of hair?  Pish-posh!

Noggin:

Don’t look at me, dudes.  I’m the only normal in the bunch.

Pete:

Don’t tell me it’s because I’m green.  It’s not is it?

Adult:

(hesitates) I really couldn’t say…
