Homecoming-Drama Skit

Homecoming-Drama Skit

Themes: Church homecoming celebrations; heaven
Categories: With God, Church Relations
Summary:

When a Southern church begins preparations for their annual "Homecoming" celebration, a young woman new to the proceedings can't help but notice many similarities between their church's celebration and the final "homecoming" of all God's people into heaven.

Notes:

This skit was originally written for a church Homecoming. For many churches, "Homecoming" Sunday is a time for people to gather together, put aside any religious or personal differences and worship God. For many churches it is an annual event steeped in tradition and one that most church members look forward to year after year.

Ray:

(to Paul and Liza) Since this is your first year with us, what do you think of the concept of what you know about Homecoming Sunday so far?

Liza:

I think it sounds wonderful!  I love the idea that family and friends all come back "home" for a day.

Betty:

Wait 'til you hear the music; it's like nothing you've ever heard before - all those voices blended together in perfect harmony, rising to the ceiling and overflowing into the church yard...it gives me goose bumps just thinking about it!

Jane:

The preaching is even better, especially if Rev. Childs is here.

Ray:

I remember him from when I was a kid.

Betty:

Me too.  He was the most animated speaker I've ever seen!

 (Later in the skit....)

Liza:

(laughs) No. You said something about Paul feeling like he was in heaven.

Paul:

If the food is as good as you say it is, I've got no doubt I will be!

Liza:

But doesn't this all seem a little bit like heaven?

Jane:

How do you mean?

Liza:

I guess it's the whole idea of everyone coming home.  In heaven, all God's people will be coming home too, and it won't matter what race or religion we are.  We'll all be gathered together, united, and worshiping as one.

Betty:

Just like it is during Homecoming.

Liza:

Exactly.

Betty:

I never really thought about it like that before but I can definitely see some similarities.  During Homecoming no one is arguing over whose beliefs are better or more important, and there's no competition.  We're all united towards achieving the same goal: worshiping God.

Jane:

And we've got a pretty good "choir" of voices here on that day - just imagine how much bigger and more beautiful it will sound throughout eternity!

Ray:

I can picture all the heavenly preachers up there too, past and present.  Can't you just see Moses standing on a mountain top comparing notes with Elijah or Jeremiah?

Paul:

From what it sounds like your Rev. Childs could certainly hold his own with those men!

Betty:

It would certainly be something to see them all gathered there together, talking to God and all His saints!

Jane:

Can you imagine all the fellowship that will be taking place up there?  You know what it's like around here on Homecoming Sunday - people laughing and chatting for hours, catching up on all that's taken place since they've seen each other last; people hugging and crying at the sheer joy of being in each other's presence.  What must it be like to reunite with loved ones we've lost over the years?

Liza:

I can't wait to see my mother again, and my grandparents!

Jane:

Can you imagine the hugs on that day?

Liza:

Right now I only dream about it.
