Categories: Senior Citizens, Topical
Summary:

Three different conversations are taking place at a community senior center: Rex and Floyd are discussing a regrettable time in Rex's not-so-distant past when he lied and cheated, only to discover someone knew his secret and was greatly affected by it.  Betty, Martha and Lily discuss the idea of mentoring and how old and young alike still have much to teach each other.  Ruth, Helen and Jean converse about the advantages of growing older and how you're never too old to learn new concepts.  Though the conversations are different, several main themes keep popping up withing them: being an example to others, learning/mentoring, and being useful at any age.

Setting: A senior center.  The stage is divided into three sections: to the left is a table with dominoes on it along with two chairs, in the middle is a table with puzzle pieces on it along with three chairs, and to the right is 3 chairs. Nearby is a large sign that says "Community Senior Center."

As the scene opens, Rex and Floyd sit at the table playing Dominoes; Betty, Martha and Lily are putting the puzzle pieces together and Ruth and Helen sit in the chairs doing some kind of sewing, crocheting or other needle work. There are three conversations taking place on stage, at different intervals.

Rex plays one domino, and then another right next to it.  Throughout their conversation, Floyd and Rex continue to play dominos back and forth.

Floyd:

(surprised) Another double?  How many have those have you had during this game?

Rex:

(smiling) I believe that was number four.  Guess I have the magic touch today.

Floyd:

Either that or you stacked the dominoes in your favor.  (also smiling) You wouldn't be trying to cheat old Floyd, now would you, Rex?

Rex:

(sincerely) No.  No, I wouldn't, Floyd.  I'm afraid I had to learn that lesson the hard way but I promise, I stopped my cheatin' ways long ago.

Floyd:

Gee, I was only kidding. (shocked) You really used to cheat?

Betty:

(to Martha) So Martha, did you ever talk to your pastor about leading that women's  Bible Study?

Martha:

No.

Lily:

Why not?  I thought you were looking forward to the possibility.

Martha:

I was at first but then I got to thinking, that group of women are all so much younger than me.  Most of them are in their early 30's and 40's.  Why would they want to listen to anything I have to say?

Pause for a moment before next person speaks.  Then Jean enters.

Ruth:

Hi Jean. Helen and I were just discussing where you could possibly be.  You're not usually late.

Jean:

(sitting in the empty seat, getting out her needle work) I would have been here sooner but my daughter called this morning and asked if I could take Chelsea to the dentist.

Helen:

That's your granddaughter, right?

Jean:

Yes.  She's six.

Ruth:

She's a little doll, that Chelsea.  And she's smart as a whip.

Jean:

Don't I know it!  You should have heard what she asked me the other day.

Pause for a moment before next person speaks

Rex:

(to Floyd) I'm ashamed to say it but yes, there were quite a few times when I cheated.  Lied, too.

Floyd:

The two often seem to go hand in hand.

Rex:

I supposed so but I never thought of it as being a bad thing.

Floyd:

How do ya' reckon' that?

Pause for a moment before next person speaks

Lily:

(to Martha) What do you mean, "why would they want to listen to anything you have to say?"  They'd listen to you because you're an intelligent, mature woman who has years of experience!

Martha:

Yeah, and all those years are pretty evident--I've got the gray hair, the wrinkles, and the arthritis to prove it!

Betty:

What's that got to do with anything?

Pause for a moment before next person speaks

Helen:

(to Jean) Chelsea didn't ask you where babies come from did she?

Jean:

Heavens, no! It was nothing as dramatic as that.  She asked me why I read the Bible.
