Stepping Out-Drama Skit

Themes: Stepping out of comfort zones; keeping our eyes on God; fear of trying new things; walking on water; volunteer work
Categories: Women's Ministry, With God, Topical
Summary:

Sharon feels God has called her to step out of her 'comfort zones" so she appears at an agency ready to be assigned some volunteer work.  The only problem is, any time various volunteer opportunities are mentioned, Sharon often screams in fear and/or starts stressing out in a huge way.  Kathy, the supervisor, is patient at first but eventually becomes frustrated with Sharon, and shouts out "If you want to walk on water, you've got to get out of the boat!"  Finally, Sharon admits the root of her fear is failure and is afraid she'll "drown"  (metaphorically speaking).  In the end, Kathy helps Sharon see that if God is calling you out of the water, He'll never let you sink--as long as you keep your eyes on Him.

Setting: A volunteering agency. A woman sits at a desk that has a phone, folders and papers on it.  Two empty chairs sit facing the desk.

As the scene opens, Kathy sits at the desk looking over files.  After a moment Sharon enters.

Kathy:

(looks up, then stands to greet Sharon) Hi. Are you Sharon?

Sharon:

Yes.  I'm here to meet with Kathy.

Kathy:

That would be me.  (extends her hand to shake) It's nice to meet you.  Have a seat.

Sharon:

(sits down) Thank you for seeing me on such short notice.  I'm really excited to be here.

Kathy:

I'm glad you found us.  (opens a file on her desk and looks it over) So Sharon, on the phone you mentioned you were interested in doing some volunteer work.  Did you have anything in mind?

Sharon:

No, not really.

Kathy:

May I ask what brought you to this agency?

Sharon:

Of course.  I guess you could say what brought me here was a 2009 Toyota Camry.

Kathy:

(smiles) No, I meant what led you to come here?

Sharon:

Oh, that!  God did.

Kathy:

(interested) Really?

Sharon:

Yes. I heard a sermon last week about stepping out of your comfort zone and I felt like God was telling me to do that. So, here I am!

Kathy:

That's great!  I'm sure we can find something for you.

Sharon:

I hope so.  I really want to help people.  I feel God has blessed me and my family and I want to be able to give back to others. I feel you can't truly grow unless you step out in faith.

Kathy:

I'm so happy to hear that.  I wish we had a hundred more like you!

Sharon:

I'm happy to help in any way I can.

Kathy:

Okay, let's start out with something simple.  The city council is looking for volunteers in our area who are willing to help pick up trash alongside the roads.  It's a once a month commitment.

Sharon:

(crinkles her nose) Picking up trash? I don't know if I can do that.

Kathy:

(encouraging) It's not hard at all and it usually only takes a few hours in the afternoon.

Sharon:

It's not the time I'm worried about.  I don't like being alongside the road.

Kathy:

Why not?

Sharon:

I might get hit by a speeding car!

Kathy:

It's very safe, I assure you.  You'll be wearing a bright orange vest...

Sharon:

(interrupting her) I look terrible in orange.

Kathy:

It's only for a few hours. ( continuing on) And you'll be down in the ditches most likely, away from the cars.

Sharon:

Ditches? (screams loudly)

Kathy:

(concerned and confused) What's wrong?

Sharon:

(going into a panic, fanning herself, scared) There are snakes in ditches! What if I get bitten? What if it's poisonous?  What if there's no antidote? (looking faint) The room is suddenly spinning...I don't feel well! (almost faints)

Kathy:

No, no, no! (reassuring Sharon) It's okay, we'll forget the trash clean-up. We'll find something else.

Sharon:

(looking better) No snakes?

Kathy:

No snakes.

Sharon:

(becomes immediately fine) Whew!  That was a close one! What else have you got?

Kathy:

(looking over her files) Let's see, here we go, this might be something good for you.  It's indoors.

Sharon:

Sounds good already!

Kathy:

It's volunteering at the youth center on Main Street.

Sharon:

(skeptical) Youth?

Kathy:

Yes. The center is always looking for people to come in and help organize games and projects for the teenagers to do.

Sharon lets out another big scream

Kathy:

What now?  There aren't any snakes.  I promise!

Sharon:

(afraid) No, it's...it's...(too scared to get the words out)

Kathy:

(concerned) What's the matter? It's..it's... what?

Sharon:

It's...(barely chokes out the word) It's... teenagers
