Summary:

When Beth prayed and asked God to give her a grateful heart, she didn't expect God to send a guy dressed like a big, red heart to follow her around.  Now, at every turn she finds the "grateful heart" correcting her negativity and pointing out the finer aspects of what it means to be thankful.  Beth never realized how much negativity she carried with her and now that it continues to be pointed out to her, she's almost regretting her initial prayer.  In the end, Beth finally understands how to be thankful, no matter what, and she even becomes thankful for her grateful heart.

Setting:  A restaurant, which can be as simple or elaborate as desired. The .Heart. character is a person (can be either male or female) dressed as a big red heart.  This could be accomplished simply with a large piece of poster board in the shape of a heart hanging from the person's neck.  Beth is the only person that can see or hear the heart.

Beth enters

Beth:                (looking around) Sara must not be here yet.  I think I'll just sit at that table and wait for her.

(Beth sits at a nearby table. After a moment, Heart rushes in and sits next to Beth)

Beth:                (horrified) What are you doing here?

Heart:              (out of breath) You didn't think.(huffing and puffing) you could get rid of me (huffing and puffing) that easily, did you?

Beth:                (caught off guard) Yes! (reconsidering) I mean, no, of course not.

Heart:              Are you sure?  You were running pretty fast back there, and you look very surprised to see me.

Beth:                I just didn't expect..I mean, you rode with me in the car all the way over here.

Heart:              But you didn't actually expect me to come into the restaurant with you, did you?

Beth:                Honestly? No.  (looking around, uncomfortable) It's a little embarrassing.

Heart:              Why?  No one can see or hear me but you.

Beth:                I'm sorry but you make me a little uncomfortable.

Heart:              You asked for me to be here, remember?

Beth:                But I didn't know it was going to be like this!

Heart:              That's the point, isn't it?

Beth:                (a little ashamed) I guess so.

Heart:              (softening) Look Beth, I promise things will get easier.  It just takes time.  Okay?

Beth:                Okay.  Why don't you sit down?  Sara should be here soon.

(Heart sits)

Beth:                (looking at her watch) Sara is always late.  Look, (she shows Heart her watch) I purposely arrived 10 minutes late because I knew she'd be late, but she still isn't here.  She does this all the time. It drives me crazy!

Heart:              Maybe you should be thankful you have a friend like Sara at all.  She's not the best at time management, but she does have a lot of other good qualities.

Beth:                (ashamed) I know.  You're right.  I'm sorry.  I am grateful for Sara.  When I got so sick last year with the flu, she came every day after school to watch the kids for me until Tim got home.

Heart:              See?  That's what I'm talking about.

Beth:                I hope she gets here soon.  I'm starving!  That yogurt I had for breakfast didn't last very long.  My stomach's been growling for an hour.

Heart:              Only an hour?  There are thousands of people whose stomach growls all day long because they don't have enough food to eat.  There are people in the world who really are starving!

Beth:                (rolls her eyes and sighs) Yes, of course you're right.  (somewhat sarcastic) I'm grateful I had yogurt to eat this morning and that I am about to gorge myself upon a cheeseburger and fries for lunch.  There!  Is that better?

Heart:              Beth.

Beth:                (getting annoyed) What?

Heart:              You asked for me.

Beth:                'to be here.  I know. (softening) But when I asked God to give me a grateful heart, I didn't know it was going to be like this.  I didn't realize how much work it would be.

Heart:              Isn't this what you wanted?  For God to show you the times when you were less than thankful?  You asked for a grateful heart, and here I am!

Beth:                No offense, but you're kind of annoying.

Heart:              I'm annoying?

Beth:                Yes!  On the way over here all you did was nag, nag, nag!

Heart:              That's not true.  I only pointed out the times when you weren't being grateful.

Beth:                But that was every two minutes!

Heart:              And whose fault is that?  I'm only doing my job.  You're the one who is not thankful for her own circumstances.  Perhaps if you were more thankful, I wouldn't have to .nag,. so much, as you put it.  Even now, you're complaining about my presence, instead of being grateful God answered your prayer!

Beth:                (softening) I know you're right.  I did ask God to show me when I'm not being thankful. It's just hard to acknowledge how often that really is.

Heart:              It takes practice.  You'll get there.

Beth:                Hey, here comes Sara.  (disgusted) It's about time!

(receives a dirty look from Heart, then changes her tone)

I mean, I'm so glad she's here.  She's a great friend. (plasters on a fake smile)

Sara enters and sits and the table.  She is oblivious to Heart.

Sara:               Hi Beth.  I'm so sorry I'm late.

Beth:                That's okay.  The important thing is you're here now.

Heart:              (to Beth) See, now was that so hard?

Sara:               Traffic was terrible.

Beth:                Did you take 29th Street?

Sara:               Yes.

Beth:                I hate that road.  I don't know what's taking so long to get it fixed. Doesn't the city know what an inconvenience it is right now?

Heart nudges Beth with his elbow

Beth:                Ow!

Sara:               Are you okay?

Beth:                Just got a cramp in my arm.  I'll be fine.

Sara:               You know, in regards to that road, the crews are working as hard as they can.  I've even seen them working some nights.  Besides, the wait will be worth it in the end when it's all finished and we have brand new 4-lane road.

Heart:              (gives Sara a warm smile) That kind of attitude is so refreshing.
