The Christmas Addition-Drama Skit

The Christmas Addition-Drama Skit

Themes: Christmas; The Nativity; The birth of Jesus; The real meaning of the Christmas season
Categories: Christmas
Summary:

Chaos ensues in a normal family household, when members of a nativity set begin to clash with the more traditional decorations of Christmas. Everything was going fine at first: Tree felt that since nearly every household has a tree where everyone gathers on Christmas, then the holiday must begin and end with him. The Red and Green Ornaments, along with the Christmas Lights felt they make everything in the season more beautiful, while the Gifts were sure they were the best part of Christmas.  Even the Nutcracker felts he played an important role because it's his job to watch over and protect everyone, keeping all the holiday decorations safe. But when they all witness the new addition of the nativity set being added to the decor, everyone shows concern, since they have no idea who these people are. Only the Angel atop the Christmas Tree is delighted with their presence, since she has been awaiting their arrival in the household for a long time. As the nativity characters begin to tell their story (with comedic undertones), the other decorations begin to see why the baby lying in the manger is the real star of Christmas, and they learn how there can be room for all of them at Christmas.

Setting: A family living room. Check costume notes at the end of the skit for costume & staging ideas.

As the scene opens, Tree, Angel, Red & Green Ornaments, Light, Nutcracker, and Gift 1 & 2 are all on stage.  Angel stands at the top of the tree, Light stand in the middle, with Red Ornament on one side and Green Ornament on the other.  Gift 1 & 2, sit at the foot of the tree, while Nutcracker (Nutty) marches back and forth in front of the tree.

Nutty:

(dressed as a nutcracker or soldier, marches back and forth, then shouts) "Ooonnne o'cloooock and all's weeeellll!"

Tree:

(to Nutty) Must you do that every hour?

Nutty:

(in a military-type voice) Yes, Sir! I am the ambassador of goodwill, and it is my sworn duty to serve and protect the inhabitants of this home!

Light:

We go through this every year, Tree.  You've been around long enough to know the procedure.

Gift 1:

Procedure?  I'm new here.  What procedure?

Tree:

(rolls his eyes) Here we go...

Nutty:

(stops marching and talks to Gift One) You see, Ma'am, legend says that Nutcrackers were given as special gifts to celebrate good will and act as a protector to ward off evil spirits.

Gift 1:

(concerned) Evil spirits?

Nutty:

Don't you worry, Ma'am, as long as I'm on the job, you won't be in any danger.

Red:

Tell her what happens if you do sense danger.

Tree:

(to Red) Quit encouraging him!

Nutty:

Why, if there is any danger, I just bare my teeth and growl (he shows his teeth and makes an angry "Grrrrr!" sound).  That usually does the trick.

Gift 1:

And if it doesn't?

Green:

Tell her what you do then.

Nutty:

If they ain't scared off right away, then I just open my big mouth and chew 'em right up! That takes care of 'em for sure!

Gift 2:

Gross!

Gift 1:

(sighs dreamily) I think it's romantic! Serving and protecting the ones you love...

Nutty gives her a wink and a tip of his hat, then continues to march slowly back and forth

Gift 2:

You think everything is romantic: the bright Light, the twinkling ornaments...

Red:

(proudly) We are rather twinkly.

Light:

(proudly) And I am rather bright.  The brighter, the more beautiful - that's what I always say.

Gift 2:

(yawns) You're bright all right.  I was up half the night 'cause your Light kept me awake.

Light:

(proudly) Thank you.

Gift 2:

Can't you at least turn them off at night?

Light:

(gasps, devastated at the thought) A light was meant to shine.  Without my shine, I'm nothing!

Gift 2:

Without my sleep, I'm grouchy!

Red:

Don't worry, you'll get used to it.

Gift 1:

I can't wait til Christmas morning! When I'm finally opened, I will fulfill my Christmas destiny!

Green:

Whatch'ya got in there anyway? Is it a doll? I bet it's a doll.  Am I right?

Gift 1:

A present can never tell.

Green:

(to Gift Two) I bet you'll tell, won't you?  Whatch'ya got inside?  Is it a truck?  I bet it's a truck.

Gift 1:

(to Gift Two) Don't you dare tell!

Gift 2:

(to Green) She's right.  (indicating Gift One) I can't tell.  It's kind of the secret "code" of presents.  What's inside is always best when it's a surprise.

Green:

Just a hint?  I promise I won't tell.

Red:

Don't tell her anything! She's a terrible secret keeper.

Green:

Am not!

Red:

Am too!

Nutty:

Silence!  Someone is coming.  (in a military tone) Atten-SHUN!

All the characters stand absolutely still, as Woman enters with shepherds (Shep 1 & Shep 2), one on each side of her. The Woman should have her hands on the elbows of each shepherd, leading them, positioning them on stage. When the shepherds are in position, Woman exits.

Nutty, who is in a defensive, "attacking" position, begins to look fierce and growl at shepherds. The shepherds look quizzically at Nutty but are un-phased.

Angel:

(to Nutty) Wait.

Nutty backs off but is still cautious

Tree:

(to Angel) Do you know them, Angel?

Angel:

Maybe, but I can't be sure unless I see the others.

Tree:

Others? You mean more are coming?

Angel:

Possibly. We must wait.

Red:

She's coming back.

Nutty:

(in a military tone) Atten-SHUN!

Everyone except shepherds stand straight. Woman enters again, with the Three Wise Men, positioning them on both sides of Mac & Jack. Woman exits.

Angel:

(hopeful and excited) I can't believe it.  I've been waiting so long!

Tree:

Who are they?

Angel:

I must be sure

Woman returns with Mary and Joseph.  She positions them so Mary and Joseph are kneeling on the floor in front of the shepherds and wise men.

Tree:

Is it them? Is it who you've been waiting for?

Angel:

(hopeful) I need to be absolutely sure...

Woman returns a final time with Star and the manger with baby Jesus in it. (A doll can be used for baby Jesus).  Woman positions Star so she is standing higher up in back of the shepherds.  (Star could stand on a chair to raise her up) Woman examines her "work," making sure everyone is in place, smiles, then exits.

Angel:

(excited) It's them!  It's Him! They're here!  They've finally come!

Red:

Who?  Who are these people and why are they here?

Nutty:

(heading toward the manger scene, ready to do "battle") I'll tell you who they are...they're a bunch of rebel-rousers come to burn down our Christmas tree and ruin Christmas! (begins growling and snapping his teeth at the manger scene folks)

When the Wisemen speak, they are very "business-like" and a bit snooty

Wiseman 1:

I beg your pardon, Sir!

Angel:

Nutcracker, no! These people are not here to harm us!  They carry the greatest gift of all with them!

Nutty:

Oh! (smiling & relaxing) Are you Santa's elves?  Sorry, I didn't recognize you in those costumes. Where's your jingle bells and pointy shoes?

Wiseman 2:

What on earth are you talking about?  Who is Santa and what is an elf?

Tree, Red & Green, Gift One & Two, Light, and Nutty all let out a huge gasp

Light:

(upset) You don't know who Santa is?

The manger folk all shake their heads "no"

Light:

(angry) Get 'em, Nutty!

The tree folk begin to urge him on, as Nutty starts to attack

Angel:

(in a loud voice) STOP!

Everyone is silenced and Nutty stops immediately in his tracks

Angel:

This is getting out of hand!  Now, please listen.  All of you.  There is a wonderful story to tell but you've got to relax. Do not be afraid. (looks to Nutty) No one is here to hurt us.

Shep 1:

(to Angel, recognizing her) Hey, I know you.  You're the one who came...

Angel:

(interrupting, shaking her head, speaks to Shep 1) Not yet.  All in due time. (to the Tree folk) I've been hoping and praying for a long time these people would come to this home, and now they finally have!

Tree:

We don't understand.  Who are they are why are they so important?

Wiseman 3:

We could ask the same of you.

Tree:

You're asking us who we are?

Light:

We're only the greatest symbols of Christmas ever!

Red:

Without us there wouldn't be a Christmas!

Green:

Not a very good one anyway.

Tree:

I am the wise old tree. I've been here to witness every Christmas this family has had.  Every Christmas has a tree; it's not a proper holiday without it.  Christmas begins and ends with me.

Light:

We may him look good. (indicates Tree) We represent the beauty of the season. (indicates herself and Red & Green) No other light shines as brightly as me.

Green:

And no other ornaments are more beautiful than us.

Tree:

I also watch over the presents beneath me.

Gift 1:

Most people think we're the best part of Christmas.

Nutty:

And I guard and protect them all!

Angel:

(to manger folk) As you can see, (points to the tree and the others) they represent what Christmas has become today.

Gift 2:

We're the true spirit of Christmas.

Shep 2:

(looks at the other group) Y'all are jokin', ain't ya?

Angel:

I'm afraid not.  But don't blame them.  They've never heard the true story.

Tree:

What true story?  What are you trying to say Angel?

Angel:

While all of you have become an important part of Christmas, this (points to the manger folks) is what Christmas is really about.

Nutty:

You can't be serious!

Red:

They aren't much to look at, are they?

Green:

They aren't shiny or sparkly at all!

Angel:

Appearances can be deceiving. That baby lying in the manger is the greatest and most beautiful gift we will ever be given.

Light:

A baby?  Seems like a weird gift to me.

Mary:

(proudly) He's no ordinary baby.
