Summary:

When Sarah Breedlove's hair starts falling out and developing red, flaky patches, she decides to develop a new hair care formula, which was given to her in a dream.  She doesn't think it sounds too crazy but her sister Louvinia (Lou) and her husband, Charles Walker, aren't so sure.  Arguing that Sarah can barely read and knows nothing about hair products, Lou and Charles try to dissuade her.  However, Sarah doesn't give up that easily.  She knows she was given the hair formula for a reason and figures if she can change her name to something that sounds more official, people will listen to her and buy her products.  In the end, she says goodbye to Sarah Breedlove and hello to Madam C.J. Walker.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

Setting: A living room. As the scene opens, Charles is frantically looking for his glasses.

Charles:

(enters, looking around) Where did I put them?  I just had them last night so they have to be around here somewhere.

Looks for a moment more, then calls out to Sarah, who is off stage

Charles:

Sarah, have you seen my glasses?

Sarah:

(from off stage, calls back) No!

Charles:

Can you help me look for them?

Sarah:

(off stage) Not now!

Charles:

But you know I can’t see worth anything without them.  Please, come help me look!

Sarah:

(off stage) I’m busy!

Charles:

(talking to himself, he mimics Sarah in a “snippy” voice) “I’m busy.”  What could be so important that she can’t help her own husband find his glasses? She knows I can’t see anything without them.

Sarah’s loud, anguished scream is heard from off stage

Charles:

(instantly concerned) Sarah?  Are you all right? (long pause of silence)  Sarah?  (silence)  I’m coming, Sarah!  Hang on!

As Charles starts to exit, he runs right into Louvinia, who has just entered

Lou:

Ouch!

Charles:

(rubbing his head) Oh, my head!

Lou:

(rubbing her lip) Oh, my lip! You should watch where you’re going, you know!

Charles:

Sorry Louvinia, I didn’t see you.  I don’t have my glasses.

Another scream is heard off stage from Sarah

Charles:

Oh, I almost forgot.  I’m coming Sarah!

Lou:

I wouldn’t go in there if I were you.

Charles:

Why not?

Lou:

It’s not a pretty sight.

Charles:

It sounds like she needs help.

Lou:

Believe me, the kind of help she needs, you can’t give her!

Charles:

What’s going on?  What are you two doing back there?

Lou:

Nothing.  I was just brushing Sarah’s hair.

Charles:

Then why does she keep screaming?

Lou:

You know, I think I saw your glasses on the table by the lamp in the living room.

Charles:

(suddenly remembering) Right, I fell asleep in the chair last night and I took them off so they wouldn’t get broken.  Thanks, Lou.  (he quickly exits)

Lou:

(calling to Sarah who is still off stage) Sarah, are you done yet?  Are you okay?

Sarah enters with very “wild” hair, with white and reddish pink “flakes” scattered through it.  Some of the hair is matted together.  The crazier the hair looks, the better. A silly wig would work for this effect.

Sarah:

(enters, angry) Do I look like I’m okay? Do you see what is happening to my hair?

Lou:

It doesn’t look so good.

Sarah:

I know!

Lou:

Did any more of it fall out?

Sarah:

There’s another handful of it in the sink.  Didn’t you hear me scream?

Lou:

Yes, and so did Charles.  He was wondering what we were doing.

Sarah:

(gasps) Charles?  You can’t let him see me like this!

Lou:

He’s your husband, he may not care…

Sarah:

He’s coming!  Hide me!

Sarah quickly hides gets behind Lou as Charles enters

Charles:

(enters with his glasses on) Ah, that’s much better.  Now I can see again.  (noticing Sarah hiding) Sarah, what are you doing?

Sarah:

Nothing.

Charles:

Then come on out here where I can see you.

Sarah:

No!

Charles:

I’m worried about you. Are you okay?

Lou:

Sarah, he’s going to find out sooner or later.  It may as well be now.

Lou moves out of the way, and Sarah is bent over, with her head down

Charles:

(to Lou) What’s wrong with your sister?

Lou:

It’s her hair.  She doesn’t want you to see it.

Charles:

(laughs) Is that all?  And here I thought it was something serious.  (to Sarah) Come on, let me see.  It can’t be that bad.

Sarah slowly stands up, revealing her hair

Charles:

(taken aback, lets out a huge gasp) Uugh!

Sarah:

(begins to cry) I’m hideous!
