Lent is Spent-Drama Skit

Themes: Easter; Lent; thinking of others; community service,
Categories: Children, Easter, Youth
Summary:

When a Pastor challenges people to "take on" things for Lent season, it causes some confusion and wonderment for a little girl named Sally. She's not sure what she's supposed to do, since she is so used to giving things up for Lent.  Her friend Pete thinks he can help and suggests ways to clean out her belly button, confusing "Lent" with "lint."  When Pete finally gets the concept, he begins offering some good ideas, but it seems his ideas tend to help himself more than anyone else.  When Sally points this out, Pete admits "taking on" things is hard, and wonders if the Pastor considered this before he suggested it.  The discussion briefly turns to what Jesus took on for us (our sins) and then how he gave his life so we could live forever in heaven. In the end, Pete and some other friends find ways to truly help others and make some changes in their attitudes, grasping the concept the Pastor originally intended.

As the scene opens, Sally is praying out loud to God. .

Sally:

(looking up, worried) I don’t know, God, this is such a new idea for me.  I don’t know what I’m supposed to do!

Jackie and Sam enter.

Jackie:

Sally, what’s the matter?  You seem worried about something.

Sally:

I am:  it’s this whole new idea for Lent this year.  It’s all so confusing!

Sam:

Really?  I thought it was pretty simple: instead of giving up things, we take on positive behaviors and projects aimed at helping others.  I thought it was a great idea!

Jackie:

Me too.

Sally:

But I’ve always given up stuff for Lent – I don’t have any idea what I’m supposed to “take on.” What if I can’t figure it out?

Pete enters

Pete:

Hey, what’s going on?

Sam:

We’re talking about Lent.

Jackie:

Sally doesn’t know what she should do.

Pete:

I can help you.

Sally:

(brightening) You can?

Pete:

Sure.  I’m an expert on lint.

Sally:

That would be great, Pete!  You’re a life saver.  Where do I start?

Pete:

I usually start in the bathroom.

Jackie:

(confused) The bathroom?

Pete:

Yeah, see the trick is to make sure you’re alone where no one can see you or it could be kinda embarrassing.

Sam:

(not following) Okay…

Pete:

Oh, and you have to make sure your fingernails are short.  That’s very important!

Sam:

What do your fingernails have to do with Lent?

Pete:

Duh, only everything!  You don’t want to hurt yourself do you?

Sally:

(to Jackie) What’s he talking about?

Jackie:

(shaking her head)  I’m beginning to wonder if he knows.

Pete:

Once you’re ready, just take your finger and stick it in your belly button. Swish it around a few times, and poof! All the lint is gone.

Sally:

Ewwww!  That’s disgusting!

Pete:

What?  Like you’ve never touched belly button lint before?

Jackie:

We’re not talking about belly button lint!

Sam:

We’re talking about Lent! (stresses the “e”) Lent!

Sally:

Yeah, the month before Easter when you’re supposed to be praying and examining things in your life; it has nothing to do with your belly button!

Pete:

(realization dawns) Oooohhh!  Hey, wasn’t the pastor just talking about Lent in church recently?

Jackie:

I’m glad to see you were paying attention for a change.

Pete:

Of course I was.  He was talking about going the extra mile and really giving it our all.

Sally:

That’s why I don’t know what to do.  I don’t even know where to start.

Pete:

Simple, just do what I did: I gave up everything for Lent.

Sam:

Everything?

Pete:

Well, (not very convincing) I don’t like to brag, but yep; I gave up all the stuff my mom always gets onto me for: candy bars, pop, potato chips, video games, my cell phone…everything I could think of.

Sally:

You gave all that up for Lent?

Pete:

Yep!  It won’t be easy but I couldn’t think of a better way to really go that extra mile.  You think the pastor will be proud of me?

Jackie:

I think he would have been prouder if you had listened to his whole message.

Pete:

How do you know I didn’t?

Jackie:

Because if you had, you’d know that this year he challenged all of us to focus on what we could take on for Lent instead of what we could give up.

Pete:

(his mouth drops open) What? You mean I could have eaten all the pizza and chocolate I wanted….with permission!

Sally:

Not exactly. He said we should do things we don’t normally do.

Pete:

Right—I don’t normally ever get to eat all the pizza I want!  It would have been perfect!

Sam:

That’s not what Pastor meant.  He was talking about helping others and focusing on them during the Lent season.

Pete:

Oh.  How are you supposed to do that?

Sally:

That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out.  Do you guys have any ideas?
